A scream, a leap, a life suspended: a dog’s instinct in the face of imminent danger

I recall vividly that sunny day when I believed I had everything under control. My happy and carefree kid was playing near the house, under the watchful eye of our dog.

This dog, who appeared calm and kind, was constantly around, a silent defender ready to react at the first indication of danger. I had no idea how impactful this day would be, or how deeply this animal instinct would affect me.

A scream filled the air. 😯 I dashed outdoors, my pulse thumping furiously, each second seeming to stretch forever.

As I passed through the door, I couldn’t believe what I saw. My innocent and carefree kid had found a method to climb the small ladder that led to our rooftop.

There she was, seated on the slope, her legs swinging down, a joyous smile on her face. She seems unconscious of the impending peril. She was laughing, unconcerned, and engrossed in the joy of her discovery. 😯

I wanted to shout and run to her, but my legs seemed frozen.

A miracle occurred at that very moment. I couldn’t conceive what was about to happen, or how it could have happened. The dog, who had been placid up until that point, suddenly erupted into a lightning-fast action, its paws hitting the ground with amazing force.

With a single leap, it shot into the air, its muscles tense like a spring about to explode. It was no longer just an animal, but a protector. A profound instinct had seized control.

It deftly positioned itself beneath the ceiling, just below my daughter. I hadn’t seen its movement coming, but it had planned every second. My daughter’s smile stopped as she spotted the animal, oblivious of the gravity of the situation.

I was stuck, watching, my heart racing. In one last effort, the dog sprang, as if to capture the air around the child and sustain her if she fell.

She slipped slightly, but something caught her right before the unthinkable occurred. The dog somehow caught her in mid-air.

Safe in its powerful arms, my daughter realized she had escaped danger. The dog gazed at her and then turned to me with a calm expression, as if to say, “Everything is fine now.”
