Dancing to Alec Benjamin’s emotional song “I Built a Friend,” Merrick portrayed a boy growing up and eventually leaving behind the robot he had once created. His precise movements, dramatic pauses, and ability to make his body appear almost lifeless made the story feel incredibly real.

By the end of the routine, the audience was visibly moved, and the judges were deeply impressed. Simon Cowell even led a standing ovation, while all four judges gave Merrick a “yes,” sending him through to the next round.
