A woman from Colton brought home a set of used sofas she discovered on Craigslist from a bereaved family who gave them away for free. She felt she was being duped, but she froze when she made a surprising discovery!
Finding reasonable online deals and pricier things at deep discounts can be a daunting experience for many shopaholic customers. The cherry on top is that when something is given out for free, who wouldn’t take it?
One Colton mom scoured the classifieds to get a great price on furniture. A couch set caught her eye as she browsed the free stuff for sale on Craigslist. She had no idea, however, that she was going to bring home more than just an old set of worn-out furniture.
California-based Vicky Umodu had recently moved into a mostly vacant house. So she decided to do some internet shopping and used Craigslist to buy cheap furnishings.
Umodu noticed something weird hidden in one of the sofa cushions as she searched through the faded fabric. Umodu scrolled down and clicked on the free products listed. The first listing she came on was from a family offering a free sofa set.
But Umodu’s intuition warned her that it was a ruse, so she called the merchant to confirm. She later discovered that it was not a ruse. After the recent loss of a loved one, the family was honestly giving away the furnishings for free since they wanted to liquidate everything in their estate.
The deal seemed appealing, and Umodu thought the furniture set would be a lovely addition to her home. She related: “I recently moved in and have nothing in my home. I was so excited that we went out and got it.
“The couch set was transferred into Umodu’s residence shortly after, and she thought that was the end of it. She then went to look at the sofas. It wasn’t anything in particular. It’s just a random check that people perform after purchasing something new or used.
Umodu sensed something weird in one of the sofa cushions as she sifted through the faded fabric. She initially assumed it was a heating pad but quickly dismissed her idea due to the lack of an electrical cord.
Umodu was baffled by what could be hidden in the second-hand item. Suspicious and confused, she unzipped the cushion and peeped inside, only to get the shock of her life.
Thousands of dollars in cash stashed in several envelopes froze Umodu. She couldn’t believe her eyes and screamed in shock, gaping at the $36,000 hidden in the old cushion. She recalled:
“I was just telling my son, come, come, come! I was screaming. This is money! I need to call the guy.” While the money could have certainly tempted anyone to keep it, Umodu decided not to.
Instead, she immediately contacted the family that sold the furniture to her and informed them about the finding. But what happened next was something Umodu had dared to dream.
“God has been kind to me and my children. They’re all alive and well. I have three beautiful grandchildren, so what can I ever ask from God?” Umodu said, but her honesty didn’t go unnoticed.
Eventually, the family was surprised by her truthfulness. They also told her about finding more hidden money throughout the other parts of their house. But just a few hundred dollars and not as much as what Umodu found.
The family was also clueless about why their deceased relative hid so much money inside the old couch. However, they decided to reciprocate Umodu’s sincerity by rewarding her. As a token of gratitude, the family decided to pay for a new refrigerator for Umodu and rewarded her with $2,200 in cash.
“I was not expecting a dime from him…I was not,” an emotional Umodu revealed. Recalling such acts of honesty in history, it wasn’t the first time a buyer of a second-hand item discovered a jackpot hidden in it and returned it to the rightful owner.
