We’ve all heard some fairly inventive proposals, but Matthew’s is by far the most thoughtful and romantic. “This person is now making it incredibly tough for the rest of us,” one commenter said after seeing his video. Matt had his fiancée, Kristina, drop him off at a railway station on March 3, 2016, so he could take a flight from San Francisco to New York on the premise of celebrating a friend’s birthday. Kristina had no clue Matt had a big surprise planned for her.
Kristina may have thought Matt was seeing acquaintances on that trip, but he was really visiting her family members ahead of his planned proposal at the Napa Valley vineyard where they had met five years before. With his pals filming everything, Matt paid a surprise visit to Kristina’s mother’s house in Orlando to ask for her hand in marriage. “Her father would be overjoyed, too, Matt,” Mom added once she recovered from the shock of seeing him without Kristina.
“He knows you’re wonderful to my kid and that you care for her.” Matt also went to Las Vegas to pay a visit to Kristina’s loving grandma. Grandma claims the ring Matthew will give her — a 1935 diamond in handcrafted rose gold and platinum setting — has been in the family for 80 years, as if her granddaughter were sitting immediately across from her. I’m incredibly happy about this, and I hope you are as well,” she adds. “I want you to have as much fun with it as I had, and I had a lot of fun with it for a long time.”
The most touching, romantic, and meaningful spot Matthew visited during his vacation was a cemetery in Highland Mills, New York. Kristina’s father died four years before she and Matthew met, and she had frequently remarked on their similarities. Matthew understood how important her father is to his bride-to-be, so he brought a bouquet of flowers to the burial. “I wish I had the opportunity to really meet you,” he adds in the video below.
“Kristina often tells me how similar you and I are. Given how highly she regards you, I take delight in that. I hope you will accept me and allow me to be your son-in-law one day. I vow to take up your responsibilities as a caretaker. I vow to safeguard and care for your daughter for the rest of my life.”
Kristina and Matthew arrived in Napa Valley’s Kuleto Estate Winery some months after he returned from his vacation, thinking they were celebrating another friend’s birthday.
