Washington County Library in Minnesota recently received one of the most incredible surprises. When a book goes missing from a library for this long, the staff usually cut their losses and move on with their lives. Can you believe this book was finally returned to the library after being on the run for 47 years? It’s a hilarious story with a heartwarming twist. Karen Rodricks, according to Fox News, has been the library services supervisor at the Lake Elmo branch of the Washington County Library for some time.
She had no idea what to expect when a package arrived at her desk recently. She opened it and discovered a book that the library had rented out in the 1970s. The library posted about the unusual package on Facebook, explaining that whoever returned it clearly knew the library needed it back and even included a handwritten letter.
The letter stated:
“I was living in Lake Elmo in the mid-1970s and working on an old Mercedes Benz. I took this book out for reference. A few months later, I moved, and the book was apparently lost in the process. 47 years later, I discovered it in a trunk with other interesting 1970s items. I know it’s a little late, but I thought you might want it back. Please accept my apologies to anyone in Lake Elmo who has worked on an old Mercedes in the last 47 years. I can’t afford the late fee, but I’ll send you enough for another book.”
What thoughtfulness! There was no name or return address, but the person did donate $200 to the library. Karen, on the other hand, was unconcerned about the money inside. She was relieved to receive the note and learn more about the book’s journey. We’re curious if this book holds the record for the longest period of time spent out of the library before being returned. It serves as a timely reminder that it is never too late to take time out of your hectic schedule to make things right. This story should serve as motivation for all of us.
