This girl buys a meal for a homeless man and sits with him. Before leaving, he hands her a crumpled note.

I recently came across a social experiment in which a girl was dressed nicely and left alone on the sidewalk. The majority of those who saw her stopped to ask her where her parents were and if she needed assistance. That same girl was now dressed in worn and filthy clothes and stood in the same spot. Many people passed her by, but none seemed to notice her. Those who did only looked back with resentment.

This is today’s sad reality. It makes me wonder when this world became a haven for selfish humans who judge others solely based on their appearance. Or, how come a rich person’s life is more valuable than a poor person’s? Thankfully, someone comes along who shows us that not everyone has lost the ability to empathize with the less fortunate, giving us hope that not everything is lost.

Casey Fischer was on her way to Dunkin’ Donuts during her lunch break when she noticed a homeless man on the side of the road picking up change. He then went inside, hoping to get something to eat. Fisher got closer and saw that the change in the man’s hand was barely worth $1. She then invited him to her table and offered to pay for his coffee and bagel.

The man introduced himself as Chris and told Fischer how he was frequently mistreated simply because he was homeless. He admitted to abusing drugs and becoming the man he despised. What he truly desired in life was to be the person of whom his late mother would be proud. However, I was unable to do so. As it was time for Fischer to return to class, she told Chris that she had enjoyed meeting him but that she had to leave.

But then he told her to wait a minute, took a crumpled piece of paper, scribbled something on it, and handed it to his new acquaintance. Fischer felt overwhelmed when she opened the note. She had no idea what she had done would mean so much to the homeless man. This meeting was much more than just a chat over coffee and a bagel for him. It influenced him in some way. We’d also like to thank this lovely lady. You are the change that this world requires to keep turning.
