Have You Noticed People Have Stopped Using These Manners Today?

It can be tempting to break the rules of etiquette in order to make our lives easier, but in the end, following some simple manners will usually save time or grief. Courtesies like these were once common, but it appears that people today have forgotten that these small etiquette rules can make a big difference.

Say “Excuse Me” 15 times. This is the most polite way to apologize, but it’s also a very well-bred way to get someone’s attention. Shouting or approaching someone quickly in public can be startling.

1. Do not arrive empty-handed. Some exceptions apply, but if you are invited to a housewarming, birthday, or dinner party, it is customary to bring something for the host or the group.

2. Share the Walkway Making room for others on the sidewalk is a simple way to keep traffic moving on major thoroughfares. 3. Be the Stronger Man. When you’re in the wrong, apologizing goes a long way toward mending fences.

4. RSVP. There was a time when responding to an RSVP event was critical, regardless of whether you were going or not. Nowadays, many people do not respond at all, which makes getting a head count difficult.

5. It was considered polite to give someone space when they needed to take a phone call back when everyone had a landline phone. People now talk on their cell phones in almost every public place you can think of. What a difference a generation can make!

6. Lend a Helping Hand. If you see someone who needs help, whether it’s holding the door or getting something off a high shelf, it’s polite to offer your assistance

7. Do not bring people or pets without first asking permission. It is never a good idea to arrive at someone’s home or event with uninvited guests, furry or otherwise. Always ask first, and then you’ll know what’s going on.
