Most people were surprised to learn that late actor Robin Williams received $75,000 rather than $8 million for his role in the Disney classic film Aladdin. Williams, who died in 2014 at the age of 63, played Genie in the film, a role that has since been played by Will Smith in the 2019 live-action remake. Despite the fact that his pay was lower than what he used to charge, it was revealed that he was only paid $75,000…
But the father-of-three chose to forego the money for the role for a reason. Williams, who starred in many childhood favorites such as Flubber, the Night At The Museum trilogy, and Mrs. Doubtfire, revealed that he accepted the low pay because he simply wanted to be a part of the animation tradition and leave something for his children. However, he only had one condition, according to Screen Rant, that his voice not be used as a marketing tool for Disney.
However, the studio did not keep its end of the bargain, and Williams declined to return for the 1994 sequel. Genie was voiced in the sequel by Dan Castellaneta, who previously voiced Homer Simpson. The production company allegedly apologized by sending Williams a $1 million Picasso painting, but the actor claimed it came before the breach of their contract.
“The thing is, they didn’t give me a Picasso as a punishment for breaking the agreement,” Williams explained to the Toronto Sun. “The Picasso came first, then they violated the agreement, then we broke off the marriage. Then they apologized, which was all I needed.” Williams reappeared in the 1996 Aladdin film after apologizing. What are your thoughts on the matter?
