When a pair of kind students realized that their retired janitor had returned to work at their school in order to cover his higher rent costs, they raised enough money to keep him retired. Several kids at Callisburg High School in Callisburg, Texas, discovered that Mr. James, their previously retired janitor, had returned to school and was once again emptying the trashcans. Marti Yousko, one of the kids, admired Mr. James and described him as “very shy, very quiet.”
After speaking with Mr. James, they discovered that his rent had suddenly increased by $400 per month, requiring him to return to work at the high school in order to cover his living expenses. “This is our 80-year-old janitor who had his rent raised and had to return to work,” said student Greyson Thurman in an online post.Marti and Greyson felt sorry for Mr. James after he returned to work at their school.

“No one his age should have to clean up our messes just to live,” Greyson remarked. “It hurt my heart to see him in the hall. Nobody at that age should be working; they should be enjoying their lives, you know? They are entitled to everything.” “It’s just so sad seeing an 80-year-old man having to do things an 80-year-old shouldn’t have to do,” said Banner Tidwell, a Callisburg High School senior.
The generous students decided to put up a GoFundMe page for Mr. James, with the objective of gathering $10,000 to help him pay his bills. Marti spearheaded the initiative, and Greyson then posted it online. “Hey guys, I’m having a fundraiser for our janitor who is struggling to pay his rent,” Greyson said. “He had to leave retirement to continue paying his rent, which had been raised.”

Nobody should have to work their entire life. Just a little will make a big difference in his life!! Let us assist Mr. James!”Within 48 hours, students, their families, and other generous neighbors had raised more than $20,000 to assist Mr. James, and the media soon learned what was going on. “We knew that being in a small town like Callisburg would mean that people would want to help and support us, especially with something like this,
but I don’t think we ever imagined that there’d be like news channels here,” Marti said. She informed Mr. James at school about how they’d donated more than $10,000 for him, and while he was shy, he was thankful. “When we told him, he was kind of like, ‘Dang, that’s alright!'” Marti recalled. In conclusion, and over time, the students raised far more than their $10,000 objective, totaling $270,880, more than enough to assist Mr. James retire permanently.

Mr. James conveyed his heartfelt gratitude to the kind pupils as well as the community, however he chose to avoid the spotlight during media interviews.Mr. James, according to Jason Hooper, principal of Callisburg High School, did not want “the spotlight,” but was “very appreciative of what these students have done.” The principal also stated that the goodwill of his kids inspired him.
“It’s incredible. You are aware of the need that was met thanks to three wonderful children, but all of our pupils contributed to meeting that need.”
Greyson praised everyone who contributed, saying that they had all contributed to changing Mr. James’ life. “You have all made a huge impact on him that will forever change his life,” he added. You are cherished.
