According to Insider, he and his wife Teresa planned to spend their retirement years traveling throughout the scenic roadways of the United States and Canada. Unfortunately, their hunt for a suitable mobile home to purchase proved futile. Clayton expressed his dissatisfaction, describing his struggle to find a mobile home that fit their requirements.
He stated that he was dissatisfied with the manufactured mobile houses since they needed to appear more solid for year-round use rather than occasional getaways.Clayton envisioned converting a semitrailer into a living area comparable to his family’s existing home on Vancouver Island in terms of comfort and quality. They do, however, want it to be long-term.
He stated that they intended to include solar power, water recycling, and other environmentally friendly technologies to lessen our carbon footprint and compensate for the truck’s fuel usage. Clayton began rebuilding a “real mess” of a truck five years ago.Clayton was unable to purchase a new vehicle due to financial constraints, so he took on the job of rebuilding a used one.
He spent a year repairing the car’s brakes, engine, and other mechanical components. He purchased a used trailer on eBay in addition to the truck. This blank canvas gave him the freedom to express himself and bring his vision to reality. Clayton emphasized the bleak character of the region where he worked when explaining his inspiration.
He used a trusty whiteboard to sketch out his thoughts and made constant changes.Converting the semitrailer into a dwelling place was a difficult undertaking that Clayton and his wife took on themselves, pouring their time and energy into the project. Clayton put in endless hours to the project, practically every day for five years.
“Most of it I did myself,” Clayton boasted, proud of his hands-on approach. He even made the drapes himself. Given the one-of-a-kind nature of their custom build, he feared it would be difficult to find a contractor who would comprehend his requirements, adding that “it would take longer to explain it than to actually do it.”
Another challenge was material acquisition, which was complicated by the COVID-19 pandemic. Clayton stated that his wife, Teresa, was in charge of the task. The DIY mobile house remodel also came with a hefty price tag of almost $180,000. Clayton and his wife installed vital components to make the semitrailer feel like a home in order to transform it into a comfortable living place.
