A newborn named “Baby India” made news after she was discovered abandoned in a trash bag in a forested area of Georgia. What looks to be a devastating finding has taken a positive turn of events, with over 1,000 people stepping forward to offer the infant a new home since the news emerged. Many people have approached Forsyth County officials and volunteered to adopt Baby India, according to The Today Show.
On June 6, a local family spotted the newborn, still covered in blood and with her umbilical cord connected, in a tied-up plastic bag in a wooded area near their house, and Forsyth Sheriff’s Deputy Terry Roper rescued her. Kyler and Kayla Ragatz, who initially thought the weird noise coming from the woodland area was coming from a cat, explored the sound with their parents. That’s when they came across the abandoned baby.
They later alerted local police, and Roper, the first person on the site, rescued the baby. Roper’s bodycam camera captured the moment the police officer took Baby India out of the garbage bag and wrapped her in a makeshift blanket to keep her warm.”Take a look at yourself, dear. “I’m so sorry,” the cop apologized.
Because there was no information about the baby’s parents, the police chose to name her Baby India. The newborn is currently in the custody of the county’s Division of Family and Children Services as a result of the incident.”It’s amazing the number of people who are looking to take on a new life into their families,” Forsyth County Sheriff Ron Freeman said, “and we got somebody who tried to throw one away.”
When the Forsyth County Sheriff’s Office shared the now-viral video of Baby India, they reminded the public that Georgia has a law called Safe Haven (HB 391) that allows a child’s mother to leave her baby, up to 30 days old, with an employee of any medical facility in Georgia, including any hospital, institutional infirmary, health center, or birthing center, without fear of prosecution. Hospitals, fire stations, and police stations are all included.
