Simon Cowell, the well-known TV personality, has had various health difficulties, most notably two separate bicycle accidents over the course of two years. Simon spoke freely about these occurrences during his appearance on the most recent Today Show alongside host Terry Crews, Howie Mandel, Heidi Klum, and his fellow America’s Got Talent judges. The 63-year-old celebrity, who had previously wrecked his e-bike in Malibu in 2020, met a similar fate when bicycling in London in early 2022.
Simon was asked about the huge impact of these mishaps on his view on life during a promotional segment for the upcoming 18th season of America’s Got Talent. “I wasn’t in the best shape before the mishaps, so they were far from terrific, rather quite terrible,” he remarked of his physical condition prior to the disasters. I didn’t realize how unfit I was till the subsequent healing procedure.
“It was a revelation, a true god’s moment!” he said. Simon acknowledged his continuous passion for riding and stated that he believed these events occurred for a reason. “I’m not giving up on my bike,” he exclaimed to the delight of his co-stars. I’m completely smitten with these two-wheel beauties.Simon was promptly transported to the hospital after the second incident, where it was found that he had a concussion and a shattered arm.
Even though the second crash was not as severe as the first, it nonetheless resulted in a damaged back and the need to wear a wrist brace for several weeks. Following these events, Simon began living a healthier lifestyle, especially for his nine-year-old son, Eric. Lauren Silverman, Simon’s fiancĂ©e, inspired him. He publicly recounted his experience dealing with the consequences from the e-bike injuries in an interview with The Sun in April of the previous year.
“When I broke my back, I considered going to therapy for the first time in my life because I was in such a bad place,” he explained. It was difficult to express my sentiments to Eric, and I was unhappy. I questioned if I’d ever be able to engage in physical activities with him again, such as football or even walking. Simon and Lauren welcomed Eric on Valentine’s Day in 2014. The TV celebrity then said that his child had given him a nice nickname following the bike mishaps.
In an interview with Entertainment Tonight, the Britain’s Got Talent judge admitted that she felt “embarrassed” after watching the episodes. Simon now has metal rods and screws in his back as a result of the surgery, but he found solace in the fact that his child compared him to the well-known superhero Iron Man. “When I came back together with my family,” Simon recalled with excitement, “Eric observed, ‘Dad, you look like Iron Man.’ ‘Yeah, I’m like Iron Man,’ I admitted with a sneaky grin.
Simon has been able to laugh at his misfortunes since then, even making light of his more serious injuries in June 2021 while working on the AGT set.Terry, as inquisitive as ever, asked Simon at a family-friendly trial performance if he could picture himself pulling off dangerous exploits like the father-son pair performing a Shaolin Kung Fu routine. “After breaking my back, I got to the point where I would wander around the garden with Eric, believing it was a great accomplishment,” Simon joked to the two of them.
But I couldn’t help but think, “Maybe not such a great idea!” while doing it. Simon’s road of courage and self-examination demonstrates the unshakable spirit that drives him on. Despite the problems brought on by the bicycle accidents, he continues to live joyfully and maintain his enthusiasm for cycling, all the while finding humor in his adventures along the way.
