This year commemorates the 32nd anniversary of the devastating plane disaster that permanently changed the lives of Reba McEntire and her musical family. On March 16, 1991, a tragic accident killed eight of the famed singer’s bandmates and crew members, all of them were talented musicians and close friends.McEntire resorted to social media to show her gratitude to those who have had such a lasting impact on the music industry.
On its way from San Diego to Indiana, one of the plane’s wings collided with a boulder atop Otay Mountain.Reba was sick at the time, so she stayed at the hotel with her husband Narvel and stylist while the rest of the party went on a trip. Tour manager Jim Hammon, musicians Chris Austin, Joey Cigainero, and Terry Jackson, as well as tour members Paula Kaye Evans and Terry Jackson, were killed.
“Their passion for music and incredible stage presence continue to inspire us all,” McEntire said in an Instagram tribute video. This presentation includes a performance recording of the ensemble, which serves as a poignant testament to their expertise and unity.Reba brings up the band at least once a year in conversation, keeping their legacy alive. In a 2012 interview with Oprah Winfrey, she recalled the incident and its immediate aftermath.
“When we received the notification, Narvel went to meet our pilot, who revealed the devastating news,” she remembered. Narvel came to our hotel room in the middle of the night with the heartbreaking news that one of the planes had crashed.’Are they okay?’ I inquired. ‘I don’t think so,’ he responded. ‘But you’re not sure?’ I persisted. And he responded softly, ‘I don’t think so.'” As we remember these great people, may we never forget the lasting mark they left on Reba McEntire’s career and music history.
