Simon Marks, a 37-year-old man, discovered something quite weird. As a result, despite the fact that he has been living in the same property for quite some time, it wasn’t until lately that he realized he was unaware of what was hidden in the home he purchased some years ago.
When he was trying to park his car one day, he came across what he thought was a flowerbed. His car’s wheels became stuck, and he heard unusual cracking noises emanating from the driveway. “Well, this day couldn’t get any worse,” he reasoned. He knelt down to investigate further and saw that the driveway bricks had broken, causing the driver to give way. The sound of breaking pavers led to an incredible discovery.
He discovered a piece of metal beneath the soil after removing all of it. Marks had no idea what might be lurking beneath the driveway, so he grabbed the metal piece and tried to pull it out, but to no avail. He then walked about to find out more about the odd object. He didn’t sure what to do next, so he phoned his father for assistance, and the two of them were able to carry away a large amount of firmly packed muck, which eventually led to an opening.
There was an old rusted ladder there, and the two men climbed down to see where it would take them.”My father saw it and immediately said it’s an air raid shelter,” Marks explained. “We looked it up on the internet and discovered there are quite a few in this area.” The bunker they discovered in Marks’ garden seems to have been constructed during WWII.
“The previous owner had to have known it was there, and when he built the house and put in a garden… he had to fill it in,” Marks added.During the war, these shelters were built to protect people from bombing. They are thought to have been invented by Sir John Anderson.”One of the walls is bricked up.” I’m 90% certain we won’t find out about any additional rooms, but we don’t know. “When the house was built, they might have bricked up one of the walls to make way for the foundations,” Marks speculated.
“If that’s the case, we’ll just have to leave it,” he continued. He shared images of his discovery, and his story quickly went viral.Marks and his father intend to restore the shelter because they believe it is a significant historical landmark. According to them, even if that period of history is long gone, it should not be forgotten because it gives us a glimpse of what life was like back then. The video below will take you on a tour of the shelter.
