In-laws force woman to cook and clean when sick; her response is great.

After relocating with her husband into his parents’ home to care for his elderly father, a 26-year-old lady who was reduced to a scullery “live-in maid,” decided she’d had enough. Taking up the entire household’s financial and physical duties, the woman, who was at the whim of her nasty in-laws, took a stunning decision that shocked her husband’s family.A 26-year-old lady posted her problems on Reddit, seeking help on how to deal with a scenario in which she had become a live-in maid for her in-laws.

It all seems to have started when she and her husband, 27, moved in with his parents to support his sick father. “[Father-in-law] is generally doing better now, but there’s still a few things he can’t do anymore that my husband does now instead,” noted the OP, who was the initial poster. “We’ve discussed moving out (I want to) but my in laws are very resistant to the idea, stating that there’s plenty of room here and they don’t know what they’d do without us etc.”

The woman went on to explain that she and her husband do not pay to live in the house (which has no mortgage), but they do cover all other expenses, such as household groceries, many bills (electricity, internet, TV), and half of household upgrades. “‘It’ll be your house one day,'” she was informed. She also transports the household pets to and from veterinary appointments that she schedules.

The OP explained that because she works full-time from home, she has the flexibility to help with errands, but the expectations from her in-laws are never-ending. She performs all of the cleaning and cooking herself, seven days a week, with no breaks or help. “Recently I have begun to feel resentful of the fact that once they are all done with work they can come home and relax, whereas I finish work and have to cook and clean and have no help,” she went on to say.

OP claimed the matter came to a climax when she became severely unwell, and the in-laws remained harsh with their expectations, refusing to let her rest. “I felt the worse I’ve ever felt and wanted nothing more than to sleep, however once it got around to dinner time I was woken by my [mother-in-law] to ask when I was getting up to make dinner,” she wrote in the letter.

“I didn’t want to cause an argument, so I just got up and made dinner for them, but as I was in the kitchen struggling not to pass out, the three of them sat watching a movie, waiting for me to bring in their food,” the post went on to say. The woman tried to cook and clean as if she were a dutiful servant, and she waited until later to softly voice her problems to her husband, who sounded sympathetic.”My husband apologised and offered to help more which I accepted, but the next day was an exact repeat.”

The OP dragged herself out of bed from her cramped accommodations, cooked supper, fed her husband and his parents, and then his mother pushed her over the brink. “Oh, you look truly awful!” her mother-in-law laughed. You poor thing! Oh, and would you mind giving everything a thorough cleaning later? ‘I’m not interested in whatever you have.'”Despite the fact that the OP could scarcely stand, she stood up to the horrible monster-in-law.

“I accused them of treating me like a live-in maid [and] not caring about me outside of the services I provide for them,” she stated in the letter. “I pointed out that I wouldn’t be in the communal areas if I hadn’t been dragged out to cook [and] that they could have handled one meal themselves.” Meanwhile, her husband sat passively, reluctant to back his wife up. Later, he felt she was “too emotional,” and while she admits she might have approached the situation more calmly, she explains, “I was sick [and] stressed.”

Her mother-in-law gave her the quiet treatment in the days that followed, with no apologies.Online users rallied behind the woman, providing her with the support she lacked from her spouse. “Worse than a live-in maid, actually,” one person wrote. Employees are entitled to sick leave,” while a second urged her to go: “Get out now, with or without your husband.” Nothing will change since everyone else is OK with the status except you.”

“Any payments [you’re] making stop immediately, and [your] money goes into a personal account,” another netizen noted.[Your] contribution is labor, yet you’re still being paid way too little for simply room and (barely) board, because you’re paying for four people’s food. This is highly skewed in favor of the in-laws.”The woman posted a stunning update two months later. Following the advise of her online friends, the OP began depositing her earnings into a personal bank account, transferring her money from the account she shared with her spouse.

“This turned out to be one of the best decisions I ever made because I found out I was pregnant about two weeks after this post.” I’d been told when I was 15 that I’d never be able to get pregnant naturally due to some medical issues, so it came as a complete surprise.” The monster-in-law then became a monster grandma. “Names were thrown around immediately, and [she] began talking about reducing her hours to part-time/early retirement so she could be present to raise the baby.”

“This completely irritated me; I didn’t want anyone else raising my baby,” the OP stated. However, the mother-in-law’s involvement did not end there. “Colors for the nursery, themes, and so on were continually discussed, but never with me… “Within a week, I felt like I was just an incubator,” the expecting woman stated. She was then informed that the baby would be bottle fed “so that everyone could help out.”

And the baby – a boy, as the in-laws desired – would be dressed by her husband’s mother. The OP left and began the divorce proceedings. She said, armed with “disgusting messages” from her husband and his family regarding her and her pregnant kid, that “they will not get any form of custody.” They’ve all gone rather silent since I announced the gender.” She’s expecting a girl, and the two of them will reside in a little three-bedroom house near her own family.

She continued, “Thank you again for all your kind words, the situation didn’t play out how I’d hoped, but I can’t help feeling like it’s for the best.” This story is similar to Cinderella, but instead of a stepmother, there is a harsh mother-in-law! And, while it did not go as planned, it appears that she will find her happily ever after without her soon-to-be ex-husband, whom she referred to as “mommy’s little prince.”
