A woman was perplexed as to how her boyfriend’s family Thanksgiving had gone so badly and why her boyfriend was so upset at her. She went to Reddit to find out if she was to blame.A 30-year-old lady was seeing a man who had split from his high school sweetheart barely a year before they started dating. While he had put that relationship behind him, his family members had not.
The woman’s boyfriend’s mother was devastated that he and his childhood sweetheart had ended their relationship. The elder woman considered the woman’s boyfriend’s ex-girlfriend to be a member of their family because she had grown up with them. The couple’s breakup was amicable since they grew apart as they got older and decided it was time to call it quits. This didn’t stop the woman’s boyfriend’s mother from venting on her.
The woman joined the relationship knowing that his family would need time to adjust to him being with someone else. She believed that his mother needed her to get to know her, and that things would improve. That, however, was not the case. For the first year of her relationship, the lady said her boyfriend’s mother would address her by his ex’s name. She revealed:
“…until [my boyfriend] became enraged and told her to be nice.” She giggled and explained that it was merely a habit.”Even when the woman’s boyfriend’s mother stopped calling her by the ex-girlfriend’s name, she still didn’t address her correctly. She would address the woman as Jenny rather than Janet, and so on. The woman corrected her boyfriend’s mother the first several times this happened.
She quickly learned, however, that the older woman seemed to love hurting her, so she stopped correcting her when she called her the wrong name. Aside from everything the woman had to deal with with her boyfriend’s mother, she was put in a tough situation during an important holiday, leaving her bewildered and sad. The woman was at her boyfriend’s sister’s house for a cookout a few weeks before Thanksgiving. Her boyfriend’s mother, one of his two sisters, and her husband were all in the kitchen.
As they stood there, the woman’s boyfriend’s sister mentioned how her brother had told his brother-in-law about his girlfriend’s cooking. The woman’s boyfriend’s mother was listening and sarcastically recommended that she cook the Thanksgiving turkey. She did, however, use the incorrect name again, referring to the woman as Janet rather than Jenny. The lady heard her boyfriend’s sisters laughing at their mother’s idea, but she remarked:
“The woman knew what she would do next to prove once and for all that her boyfriend’s mother could no longer call me by the wrong name.” Things came to a climax a few weeks later on Thanksgiving at her boyfriend’s mother’s place. Everyone was surprised when the woman and her boyfriend arrived with the usual wine and dessert, but no turkey, as had been discussed weeks before Thanksgiving.
The woman stated that she assumed Janet was bringing the turkey because her boyfriend’s mother had mentioned the other woman’s name several weeks prior when discussing the day. She admitted: “There was yelling, crying, and then we got kicked out.”The woman then stated that her boyfriend had not spoken to her since that night, and she assumed their relationship was gone, but she wanted to know if she was wrong for what she had done from netizens.
Instead of believing she was wrong, she quickly discovered that many others thought she was a hero for handling the matter and that the manner she retaliated against her boyfriend’s mother was nothing compared to what the woman had done to her, such as calling her the wrong name. Others said she should have confronted the elder woman, but many believed she had tried and failed, and that doing what she did was the only thing significant enough to make her boyfriend’s mother see the folly of her ways.
