My mother-in-law begs me for money to look after her grandchild, then a year later she begs me to look after her.

After the loss of a loved one, the family devolved into selfishness, causing me to see my “family” as a source of comfort. Daniel, my husband, died of cancer, leaving me with our little son Chris and a heavy burden. I wished for a miracle beside Chris’s month-old casket, knowing that miracles were only fairy tales. Polina, my mother-in-law, provided the support I desperately needed during this difficult time.

I addressed Polina about helping Chris a few weeks later. While her response was positive, new concerns arose. She eventually offered to care for Chris, and I got a housemaid job, which was a change from my typical profession, to support him. The excitement of receiving my first paycheck after a month was tempered by thoughts of bills and obligations. In appreciation, I prepared Polina her favorite apple pie in a box left over from a party.

I hoped for a nice reception when I presented the cake to Polina, but she flatly rejected it and demanded payment for caring for Chris. Stunned, I stood up for myself and walked away, deciding to care for my boy on my own. Polina called, pleading for help, a year later, while I was shopping for my son’s birthday. Regardless of her previous behavior, I chose kindness and returned to caring for her, seeing the toll her circumstances had caused.

Polina, who had previously demanded money, eventually urged me to stay, recognizing the healing power of family, love, and kindness. I regained my happiness, but I lost her when she died. Polina sent me a letter in the lawyer’s office, describing her secret troubles and apologizing.

Despite my conflicted feelings, I inherited her house, forcing me to consider whether it was too late to appreciate her situation. I forgave her and now dwell in the house haunted by memories with my son, wishing for her peace alongside her husband and children.
