Meryl had spent years searching for her grandson, Brandon, whom her daughter had abandoned at a shelter. But it appeared like all was in vain. Just when she had almost given hope, she found him… in a place where she stood out like a sore thumb. As Meryl cautiously went approached the queue overflowing with young partygoers, thoughts raced through her head. Would he believe what she said? Where would she begin to explain everything? Did he actually desire her in his life?
As if her concerned thoughts weren’t loud enough, she was overwhelmed by the concert’s loud music, the bustling streets, and the puzzled stares, laughter, and mumbling of the young people in the wait at the enormous club where the show was being hosted.”Who invited Grandma?” one youngster said, laughing with his buddies. “Seems like someone forgot to take their pills and ended up getting lost on her way to Bingo night,” another joked. “She’s definitely lost,” another person said as Meryl approached the queue.
In Meryl’s seventy-five years, she had seen firsthand how insensitive people could be. She had nothing against these youngsters. She only wanted to see him, and the long wait in line made her even more anxious. Meryl finally made it to the front of the line, and the bouncer, Don, was taken aback when he spotted the elderly woman front of him. He looked about, puzzled, as if expecting someone to appear out of nowhere and seize her.”
Yeah! “What is taking so long?” “Hello, Ma’am. Uhm, are you lost?” Don kindly inquired. Hello, young man. Meryl answered, “No, I’m not lost.” “Oh…” Don simply responded, still unsure what to make of the circumstances. “What’s your name, son?” Meryl inquired, coming closer to better hear Don over the loud music inside the show. My name is Donavan. “But everyone calls me Don,” Don responded.
“It’s nice to meet you, Don. My name is Meryl. “I was hoping—” Meryl began before one of the youngsters joined in. “Hurry up, elderly woman! “We don’t have all day!” The irritated youngster aggressively barked. “Yeah! “What is taking so long?” Another one has been added. The audience behind Meryl was becoming increasingly restless. They began shoving and yelling to reach the front. Don walked forward, putting his hand out to the audience with unwavering power.
“Calm down!” Everyone will get their chance. “Just be patient,” Don said. The crowd quickly relaxed, despite their initial reluctance.”Ma’am, I don’t have all day,” Don explained, growing angry with the elderly lady. “I apologize for making your job any more difficult than it needed to be. “I came to see this young man,” Meryl explained, presenting him a photograph of a young man.
The audience behind them let forth a blast of even louder laughter than before.Meryl looks around, perplexed and rather humiliated. Don gazed at the photo, then up at the band’s poster. The man in the photo was the lead singer. Don looked at Meryl with distrust, considering what to do next. “Alright, please step through the metal detector,” Don responded, giving the woman a chance despite his better judgment.
He was becoming skeptical about the woman. Don’s experience as a bouncer had taught him that not everything was as it appeared at such occasions, even though she was an elderly lady. “Thank you so much!” Meryl answered with thanks.Meryl passed past the metal detector, and it immediately rang. Don gazed at the old woman, frustrated.”Lady, I don’t suppose you’ll be attending the concert tonight. Besides, it’s no place for an old lady,” Don explained.
While Don was still speaking, Meryl took a locket necklace from her pocket and gave it to him. Look, Don. I appreciate everything you’ve done for me today, and I don’t want to keep you or these other young people any longer than necessary. Please just hand him this and tell him I’m outside looking for him… Please!” Meryl made an earnest plea. Don groaned profoundly and grudgingly accepted the jewelry.
“Alright, I’ll get it to one of the guys working backstage, and they’ll pass on the message,” he said. “Thank you so much, Don. It means a lot to me,” Meryl explained. Meryl sat in an adjacent hallway, hoping and praying that the young man would receive her message. She was also concerned about losing her necklace. Aside from its monetary significance, it held enormous sentimental value for Meryl.
After a few minutes of waiting, Meryl heard a big cheer from the crowds in and around the queue. Brandon, the lead singer, emerged from the buzzing crowd, roaring with delight. “This is the woman,” Don continued, bringing Brandon away from the chaotic mob and towards Meryl. Meryl stood up hesitantly as they approached her. When Brandon finally reached her, she smiled and tears welled up in her eyes.
She scrutinized the young man as if he were from another planet. She looked into his eyes like they were gold. Brandon remained silent for a while, taken aback by the woman’s behavior. “I am not, Brandon. Your mother, Bridget, was my daughter. “We are family, Brandon.””Where did you get this?” Brandon questioned, snapping out of it and going right to the subject.”You recognize it?” Meryl asked with a breath of relief.
“Yes, it was my mother’s,” he answered, opening the locket, which had a photograph of Brandon and his mother at the age of eight. “This is a picture of her and me when I was younger,” Brandon explained, lovingly stroking the pendant as he reflected. “Now, how did you get it?” Brandon inquired with considerably greater intensity this time. Meryl began to cry at the picture, then returned to Brandon, still in shock.
“Um… Brandon, I am your grandmother. “That’s my daughter,” she added nervously, pointing at the photograph. “You are lying! Where did you get the locket?” Brandon spoke emotionally. “I am not, Brandon. Your mother, Bridget, was my daughter. “We’re family, Brandon,” Meryl said.”No, that cannot be true! My mother’s family despised me! “And she…” Brandon started, now in tears. He took a moment to prepare himself. He took a deep breath and continued. “She eventually dumped me in an orphanage. Brandon, distraught, remarked, “I’ll never see you again.”
“I’m not sure where you got this, lady. But you can keep it. “I don’t have a family,” Brandon muttered, wiping his tears and flinging the locket to the floor. He then turned to Don and said, “And please don’t call me outside for such nonsense. “This woman is definitely insane. Brandon proceeded to the performances, blending into the crowd as they greeted him with sloppy cheers.
As Meryl watched Brandon recede into the distance, her legs began to fail her. She stumbled backwards and forth. “Are you okay, ma’am?” Don inquired, quickly holding her up. “Let us sit down. Don said, “I’ll get you some water,” setting her down and handing Meryl a nearby water bottle from the hall.Thank you, Don. I will be okay. It was simply a little overwhelming. “Can I still get in?” Meryl questioned, taking a large swallow of water.
“Get in, ma’am?” Don inquired, confused. “Into the concert. “I’d like to see him sing,” Meryl replied regretfully. “I’m sure it can be arranged, ma’am,” Don responded, feeling for the elderly woman. “I just hope you are up for it. “It gets pretty crazy in there,” Don explained. Oh, please. I used to party in the 1950s. “This is nothing,” Meryl scoffed. They both laughed as Don pulled Meryl to her feet and led her into the concert.
Meryl remained in awe of Brandon. Even more so as she saw him on stage doing what he enjoyed. She watched the concert in tears of joy and despair. She was overjoyed to see her grandson enjoying himself and doing what he liked. Meryl’s daughter shared the same passion for music but never pursued it professionally. As she watched him, she thought about her daughter.
However, Meryl was grieved by the possibility that she might never get to meet him. She wished things had gone better, but it appeared that this performance was the closest she’d ever get to seeing her grandchild again. Don had been observing her the entire time, sympathizing and feeling sorry for Meryl. He stood nearby, keeping an eye on her in case she collapsed. As he watched, Meryl started to stumble again. Don ran up to her, assisted her into the neighboring staff hall, and placed her on the couch.
“So much for partying in the ’50s,” Don added, chuckling. “Really, are you okay? Should I call the ambulance?” Don asked. “I am alright, Don, just a little fatigued and heartbroken. At my age, excessive activity, whether emotional or physical, might land you in the hospital. But I am fine. “I just need a little time to recover,” Meryl explained.”Okay, then. “I’ll wait with you until you feel better,” Don offered, sitting next her.
Don and Meryl talked for the remainder of the show, and she told him her story. Meryl had never heard of Brandon. Her daughter, Bridget, gave birth to him and covertly nurtured him for eight years. Bridget eloped with a man who Meryl disapproved of. When Brandon asked his mother about his family, she would simply tell him that their relatives hated them and could not be with them. Brandon’s father abandoned him and his mother just before his sixth birthday. Bridget reared him alone for two years, but then she became ill.
She realized she couldn’t afford to raise him as medical costs mounted up, so she placed him in an orphanage. Years later, Bridget arrived at her home in a frail state, pleading with her to help her find her son.Bridget detailed all that had occurred throughout the years. She told Meryl that she had tried to find him at the orphanage, but his information had gone missing, and Brandon was lost in the system.
Meryl agreed to help, and they searched for Brandon for several months without success. Bridget died later that year. Meryl enjoyed the time they had together before her death. During their brief time together, they healed old scars and acknowledged their love for one another. They made it work, even if it was challenging given Brandon’s situation. Bridget’s final desire to her mother was to deliver the locket to Brandon and be there for him, as they were the only family they had left.
“And now, here I am, trying to do exactly that,” Meryl remarked, finishing her story as she sat on the couch beside Don, looking much better. “Wow. That’s quite the story. “So, how did you find him?” Don asked.”Well, after a few years, I had stopped looking. I was still praying to find the boy, but I didn’t have the fortitude to face another disappointment,” Meryl remarked with a gloomy expression.
“Then, one day, an old acquaintance came to see me with her grandchild. She viewed the picture on the locket and informed me that the young child resembled the main singer of her favorite band. I performed my research, which lead me here. Unfortunately, it appears that it was all for naught,” Meryl stated with a big sigh.
Don stared at the woman and felt compassion for her. He was raised by his grandmother and never knew his parents. Don found the entire scene all too familiar. He felt he would be betraying his morals and grandma if he didn’t try to assist Meryl’s family. “Listen, I can’t promise you anything. However, Brandon and I have a fairly decent friendship. “I’ll try to talk to him,” Don said.
“Really? Oh, thank you, my child. “God bless you!” Meryl exclaimed, choking up.A month later, Meryl was at home, drinking tea. She stared at the locket on the table, thinking of Brandon. She hadn’t heard from him in a month, and she believed even Don couldn’t persuade him. When she opened the locket, the doorbell rang instantly.
“Coming,” she announced, softly setting the locket on the table. The doorbell rang a second time. “I said I’ll be right there,” Meryl remarked as she approached the door. As she opened the door, her heart filled with delight. “Brandon?” Meryl gave a gasp. “Hi. I spoke with Don, and I believe I’m finally ready to hear it for myself,” Brandon said, tearing up as he handed her flowers.”Of course.” “Please come in,” Meryl said, welcoming him in.
Meryl told Brandon everything about his mother from the start. She gave him the locket, expressing her daughter’s feelings for him. Brandon broke down in tears when he learned his mother had died. He hoped she was still out there somewhere. He hoped that one day they might get a second opportunity. Meryl consoled him, and from that day forward, they became grandmother and grandson. They were reunited as a family that day.
