Jessica Leonard was born absolutely healthy, just like any other child. Nobody could have predicted that she would grow up to be the heaviest seven-year-old child. Jessica, who weighed a stunning 200 kg, became something of a celebrity, and her name was all over the media, but for reasons that would make her early years hellish.
Jessica’s mother, Caroline Shu Tug, recalls her daughter’s early years as a happy and healthy child. According to her, things went awry since Jessica never refused food when provided.
She was spoilt rotten by everyone in the family, perhaps more than was necessary, and everyone would grant her demands for fast food, a variety of snacks, cupcakes from the pastry shop, and chips and nuts from the store. Jessica would have all of these in great quantities.
Although her parents do not know when the issue spiraled out of control, they do recall it being a wake-up call for them that their child was in a desperate condition when the scale showed she weighed 220 kg at the age of 7 and had difficulty breathing.
When she was taken to East Tennessee Children’s Hospital in severe condition, child protective services became aware.Jessica was included in a show that seemed like a gimmick. Her mother requested assistance, and her petition was heard by famous dietitians and nutritionists.
Carolyn was asked to attend parenting classes in order to help her daughter stay on track once she was well enough to return home. Jessica was transported to a clinic, where she began a battle for every calorie she consumed. Doctors discovered that her problem with eating stemmed from a psychological need on it. Jessica couldn’t understand why she was denied food, which she had previously received with a smile from her family.
Jessica lost a considerable amount of weight thanks to months of diets, exercise, psychiatric therapy, and sheer determination. The next time the public heard about her, she had lost 140 kg. After decreasing weight, Jessica had skin removal surgery, during which physicians removed nearly 10 kg of extra skin from her body.
