Kate Middleton has been told she has cancer. In a sad video message on Friday, the Princess of Wales shared the news. Middleton said that when she had surgery on her abdomen, doctors thought her condition wasn’t dangerous, but tests done after the surgery showed that it was.

Kate, 42, said in the video, “This of course came as a huge shock, and William and I have been doing everything we can to process and deal with this privately for the sake of our young family.”

“As you might guess, this has taken a while. It took me a while to get better after big surgery so I could start taking my medicine. The type of cancer Middleton has not been revealed, but she did say that she began “preventative chemotherapy” in February.
