When Holland was a baby, she met Mrs. Cynthia, her favorite Waffle House waitress. Cynthia bonded with the youngster on a deeper level than just knowing she liked raisin toast and apple juice.

However, in 2021, 3-year-old Holland placed her tiny hands on Mrs. Cynthia’s cheeks and asked the question that stopped her mother’s heart: “Mrs. Cynthia, I want to have dark skin like you.””Why do you have dark skin?”
