A good marriage can withstand anything. These days, you might witness people taking their marital vows for granted and then sticking by them. Delta Burke and Gerald McRaney, on the other hand, have been married for more than 30 years. Continue reading to discover about the challenges one couple has faced. When Gerald McRaney met actress Delta Burke, he knew he wanted to ask her out. But he was also intensely aware of his competitiveness, given how many men were interested in her.
He recalls when he asked her out, stating, “I wasn’t going to let her go. I already had a competition. People were asking her out on dates, and I planned to move in immediately away.” There was an immediate connection, and McRaney knew she was the one for him. On their second date, he proposed marriage. However, the pair made things official two years later, on May 28, 1989, when they married.
While it wasn’t as quick as McRaney had hoped, he was pleased to have found the girl of his dreams! While this was Burke’s first marriage, it was McRaney’s third! But this time, he was determined to make it work. While the couple was deeply in love, several people believed their marriage was a bad idea. Specifically, some of McRaney’s pals cautioned him against it. However, he consistently ignored all of these justifications. He recalls saying, “Why not?”
They are the only ones who understand this madness. And she does. If I’m on location and don’t phone her until 2 a.m., it’s no big issue. “She knows.” They are also each other’s biggest supporters when they attain success. Burke was McRaney’s biggest booster when he won a Primetime Emmy for his work in “This Is Us.” She stood in the audience, tears in her eyes, rooting for her loving husband.
McRaney stated that he has received a lot of comments over the years as an actor, but Burke is the only one he takes seriously. If she tells him a performance is good or needs work, he knows she is being truthful. In 1998, the foundation of their marriage was questioned. Burke lost her grandmother, and shortly after, her mother was diagnosed with breast cancer. She was also on pause from her acting profession after a disagreement with the creators of her show “Designing Women.”
Fans began to notice that the actress was gaining weight during her appearance on the show. It turns out she had been suffering from hypoglycemia, which had caused her weight to grow. She was constantly dealing with her weight. Ineffective hypoglycemic medication, paired with dieting, eventually led to type 2 diabetes. She had a difficult time simply acquiring a diagnosis, having to visit several doctors.
Burke says, “I traveled a lot. I was tired. My body did not feel normal. “I knew something was wrong, but no one could tell me what,” Burke explained. “They told me I had Epstein-Barr. I knew there was something else. Then one doctor ran the appropriate tests and told me I had diabetes.” She was also caring for her mother at the time, so she paid little attention to her own needs. While she was taking medication for her ailment, her doctor advised her to modify her diet or she might require insulin therapy.
Her mother made a full recovery after a hard struggle. Burke praised her spouse for always supporting her, ensuring she took her medication, and taking care of her. McRaney also won his battle with lung cancer in 2004. She now uses insulin and thanks McRaney for helping to care for her, including administering insulin shots. She stated, “He loved me when I was as big as a house.”
He has loved me through my ups and downs. He still believes my physique looks wonderful, but I can assure you it does not!”The couple remains active and cares for their health together. Burke admits that she is finally in fantastic health! Delta Burke presently has no plans to return to acting. Her husband, McRaney, does not think she will return to acting, but he would love to work with her again!
While McRaney does not want to retire, the pair has purchased a property in central Florida and plans to relocate there shortly. They have no children together, but have spent their lives parenting McRaney’s three children from a previous marriage.
