Greek Orange Cake

Baklava is a traditional Greek dish that most Americans are probably familiar with. It’s one of my all-time favorite desserts, but I hadn’t tried many other Greek sweets, which turned out to be a great mistake! I recently discovered a recipe for Greek Orange Cake (or Portokalopita, as it is typically known) and was immediately fascinated. This cake is similarly made with phyllo dough, but with a very different method. It’s bursting with spicy orange flavor, and the texture is simply divine.

With plenty of fresh orange zest and more than a cup of orange juice, this dessert hits the ideal sweet-tangy balance. Separate the phyllo dough and allow it to dry somewhat before tearing or crumbling it into little pieces. It is then combined into the delectable orange batter and cooked for approximately 35 minutes until brown. A simple orange syrup is made on the stovetop and poured over the warm baked cake, ensuring that each mouthful is moist.

Let the syrup soak into the cake for a few hours before indulging! There’s nothing wrong with serving it as an afternoon treat or a late-night dessert. We personally adore a slice with a scoop of vanilla ice cream. Change up your baking routine and try this traditional Greek treat. It’s guaranteed to become a new favorite.
