Patty was thrilled to share this special event with her daughter and grandchildren as she turned 90 years old. However, after they failed to pitch, she found herself partying with an unexpected visitor who delivered bad news. After ninety years, I can confidently say that I have had a joyful and lovely life. My name is Patricia. Since my husband died a few years ago, my daughter Angie and I have been the only members of our family.
I still remember how pleased I felt to be approaching my 90th birthday. My daughter informed me that she would visit me and spend the day with my grandchildren. When I saw my grandchildren, my heart always felt warm. It reminded me of the time I spent raising Angie with my husband. My grandkids resembled my daughter and brought me a lot of déjà vu.
They also had a striking similarity to their father and Angie’s ex-husband, John. John was someone I had always adored, so finding that they were divorcing broke my heart. John was the closest I had come to having my own son. He had a wonderful heart and was a loving individual. He still sends me Christmas letters to this day. I wish he and Angie could have reconciled, but that’s just the way things go.
I was pleased when my birthday finally arrived. However, as the day progressed, I became increasingly anxious. Lunchtime was coming, and Angie had yet to speak to me. She did not answer when I called her several times. This time, when I attempted to call Angie, the call went immediately to voicemail. Because she was driving, I assumed she would be unable to answer. However, as time passed, I understood that this day, like many others, would be spent alone.
“You are too sweet. Could you come eat with me?” Finally, the doorbell rang. I would have jumped up at that same time if my knees hadn’t been so brittle. This was the ideal birthday present because I hadn’t seen Angie and her children in a long time. My stomach fell when I saw the masculine silhouette on the other side of my glass door as soon as I arrived. When I answered the door, I found John waiting for me with gifts and flowers.
“Happy Birthday, Ma!!” John grinned genuinely as he said. “John? Wow, what a surprise! “You did not have to!” I chirped. “Just brought you a little something to celebrate you on this wonderful day,” John said. “Is the chocolate I see there my favourite? Wow, what a surprise! “You recall?” I replied, attempting to cover my flushed cheeks. “How did I miss that? “You would only ever eat that.”
John laughed while speaking.”You’re so charming. Could you join me for supper? I ushered him inside and enquired. “Oh, that’s not right. I wouldn’t want to bother. “You must have plans.” John said modestly, “I just wanted to drop off your presents and see your beautiful self.” “That is absurd!” I’d welcome the companionship and have nothing planned.” I also insisted on making apple pie.
“Apple pie? Well, you should have started with that,” John commented as he entered. One more thing I admired about John was his incredible cooking abilities. This brought up many memories of my late husband, who was also an excellent cook. John and I had a wonderful time cooking that day. I was merely grateful for the companionship, but he insisted on doing the most of the work. John finally asked about Angie while we were eating dinner.
“Trip? Did she not tell anyone about it? Did she simply get up and leave? Why would she act this way? “So, will Angie and the kids be with us? I would prefer not to be perceived as ambushing her or engaging in similar behavior. To be honest, I hadn’t planned on staying. “But I’m glad I did,” John said. “That is absurd!” We are family since you are my grandchildren’s father.”And no, I don’t think Angie will come along today,” I replied disappointedly.
“Oh, that’s disappointing to hear.” John said, “You should not spend your birthday alone. “Well, I’m not, son, thanks to you,” I said, clutching his hand. “Thank you, John,” I murmured in the end. “No problem. Could you please tell me why she didn’t come? Or at least the children. I had anticipated their arrival. “They enjoy spending time with you,” John added.
“All of them were supposed to arrive, but Angie hasn’t returned my calls. “I honestly don’t know what happened, but I have no doubt she will contact me again,” I said. “The least she could have done was drop off the kids; I have no idea what’s going on with her. “I’ll call her,” John suggested. To my surprise, Angie responded when John called her. Later, John would tell me why my daughter made fun of me on my birthday.
John continued, slightly irritated, “So, it turns out Angie, her new boyfriend, and the kids are all on vacation.” “Trip? Did she not tell anyone about it? Did she simply get up and leave? “Why would she act in this way?” I inquired. “Patty, your guess is as valid as mine. How can she get away with removing my children and without saying anything to me? John responded.
“Oh, that’s not right. This is very disappointing. Also, who is this man? I said, confused, “I didn’t even know Angie had a boyfriend.” “She had made a casual allusion, but a whole vacation? Additionally, it appeared like they had been organizing things for almost a month. I apologize, Patty, but I believe your daughter went too far this time,” John said in an annoyed tone.
“Yes, this is disappointing,” I admitted unhappily. I was entirely unprepared for this news, and it left a deep wound in my heart. Angie could have at least told me she wouldn’t be accessible. After conversing with Angie for a brief time, I urged her to come visit me as soon as possible with the kids. She did not want to bother me, but it was too late. I’ll always love her as my daughter, but I was quite upset.
Thank glad John was there to help lessen the agony. However, my daughter’s actions deeply hurt me. Right now, I’m unsure how to trust her. How should I respond to this situation?
