If you are fortunate enough to be a grandparent, you will be well aware of the anguish that comes with being separated from your grandchildren for any significant period of time. For the majority of people, living close to their children’s children is an absolute necessity. This is not always practical – my child’s grandparents reside in another country, for example – but, in general, grandparents want to see as many of their grandchildren as they can.
Spare a thought for King Charles, who not only lives thousands of miles away from two of his grandkids, Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet but is also constrained by a family rivalry, making seeing them more difficult than it should be. According to accounts, Charles is suffering as a result of his limited exposure to Archie and Lilibet during their early years. Nonetheless, there are evident obstacles in his path to finding a clean and straightforward solution.

When Prince Harry and Meghan Markle left the Royal Family, at least in terms of official duties, an optimist might have believed that the only disadvantage for the monarchy as a whole was that they would be without two individuals to use for public engagements and the like. However, it quickly became clear that there were far deeper reasons for the Sussexes’ decision to leave their lives as working royals, and the intervening years have demonstrated beyond all doubt that there are significant cracks in the relationship and standing of Harry, Meghan, and the senior members of the Firm.
After relocating across the Atlantic, Harry and Meghan wasted little time revealing their secrets to the public. Secrets, we might add, that portrayed the British Royal Family in a very negative light. First came the explosive interview with Oprah Winfrey, in which the pair revealed a series of details that set the tone for what was to come. Seemingly unconcerned with the escalating tensions between them and the likes of King Charles, Queen Camilla, Prince William, and Kate Middleton, they then released a Netflix series that delves deeper into the difficulties they faced while living as working royals in the UK.

Last but not least was Harry’s candid memoir, Spare. Spare, which was predicted to be a loaded rifle aimed right at the heart of the Royal Family, did not fail in terms of vivacity or the content’s controversy. Simply put, relations between Harry and Meghan and the monarchy are strained beyond what even the most pessimistic would have predicted. There has been conjecture in recent years that some of the participating parties are willing to find common ground in order to negotiate a peace treaty, but as things stand, there are too many complicated moving parts, too much ambiguity, and injured pride to know for certain.
However, when everything is said and done, and this is the most heartbreaking aspect of the entire situation, we are dealing with a family. Though it may be incredibly difficult, if not impossible, for us ordinary mortals to relate to the royals’ life, we must presume that they, too, experience love, remorse, and all of the complex feelings that come with it as deeply as any other person.

This brings us well to the topic of King Charles and his grandchildren. Charles is accompanied by Prince William and Kate Middleton, as well as Prince George, Princess Charlotte, and Prince Louis. While that is undoubtedly a blessing for which he is grateful, the truth remains that his two other grandkids, Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet, could almost live on Mars given how frequently he interacts with them. It’s no secret that Archie and Lilibet haven’t had the opportunity to grow up in close proximity to family members who breathe royal air.
This is reported to worry King Charles, and while the monarch may remain at odds with the siblings’ parents, he appears unwilling to completely abandon a relationship with his grandchildren. Princess Lilibet, the youngest member of the new generation of British royals, became three years old on June 4th. A celebration was apparently held at Harry and Meghan’s house in Montecito, California, and while no members of the Royal Family were invited, a number of high-profile figures, including Orlando Bloom, Gwyneth Paltrow, and Oprah Winfrey, were present.

According to the Daily Mirror, royal analyst Tom Quinn said that King Charles sent Lilibet a birthday message, along with a present, to celebrate her special day. “King Charles had no intention of completely ignoring Lilibet’s birthday, so he has sent a gift along with a message,” Quinn stated.Quinn went on to say that the King has another, more significant gift for his granddaughter, but he is saving it until the current family schism is mended.
“He gave Prince George a lovely handcrafted wooden swing with George’s name etched on it, and he intends to present something similar to Lilibet, but not this year. And not until the family feud has subsided,” Quinn added. The royal specialist stated that “shockingly, no invitations to Lilibet’s party were issued to members of the Royal Family.”
Meanwhile, an old army buddy of Harry’s elaborated on the Prince’s choice not to include any of his family members on the guest list, stating: “Harry knew they wouldn’t attend anyway, and he was very certain he wouldn’t have wanted them there. But he is deeply saddened that Archie and Lilibet would be unable to form any relationships with their relatives while his quarrel with his family continues.
It’s unclear what twists and turns the narrative will take from here on out, but repairing bridges burned and the trip to restoring trust and amicability will likely be a difficult and protracted process.
