The Federal Bureau of Investigation said on Sunday that Thomas Matthew Crooks, 20, of Bethel Park, Pennsylvania, was the “subject involved” in the attempted assassination of the former president. The event occurred Saturday night during a campaign rally at Pennsylvania’s Butler Park Showgrounds. In a social media post, Trump declared that he was “fine” after being shot and that “a bullet pierced the upper part of my right ear.”

Secret Service agents quickly took the former president, who had blood on his ear, from the podium. Two attendees were seriously injured, and one person died. It was initially unknown what Crooks’ political opinions were. The Secret Service shot him dead during the attempted assassination. Crooks was a Republican registered voter in Pennsylvania, according to documents; nevertheless, federal campaign finance filings show that in 2021, he donated $15 to a Marxist political action committee. Authorities have not made a possible motive generally known.
For special security reasons, the Federal Aviation Administration declared on Sunday that the airspace around Bethel Park will be shut “effective immediately.” According to the US Secret Service, the suspect fired at Trump, who was speaking on stage at the time, “from an elevated position outside of the rally venue” in Butler County. One of its agents also shot the suspect.

He thanked the police for their “rapid response.”In a post on Truth Social, Trump conveyed his sympathies to the families of those slain and gravely injured at the protest. After being taken to the hospital for evaluation, he was reportedly released about 10.20 p.m. local time. “It is incredible that such an act can take place in our country.”
NBC News footage showed more than a dozen bullets flying throughout the rally; later shots appeared to be fired by agents defending the president, who was speaking on stage at the time. “Get down, get down, get down!” exclaimed a voice. As the gunfire continued and yells from the audience could be heard, agents arrived and jumped on top of Trump.
On network audio, agents could be heard saying, “The shooter is down. The shooter is down. Are we ready to move? We’re clear. Let me fetch my sneakers. “Let me get my shoes,” Trump yelled during the rally as security attempted to remove him from the podium. The former president can hear agents stating, “I’ve got you.” Hold on. Your head is bleeding. We have to move.”Trump stated, “Wait, wait.” He then pumped his fist and mouthed the phrase, “Fight, fight, fight.”
And in response, the rallygoers screamed, “USA! USA! USA!” The agents then swept Trump out of sight. On camera, Trump had blood on his ear. How the gunman was able to get close enough to Trump to aim a gun at him and fire repeatedly was one aspect of the attack that authorities were “going to have to figure out,” according to local district attorney Richard Goldringer, who appeared on CNN.

The most vivid early report of the shooting came from a Trump supporter who claimed to have seen a man with a weapon walk onto the top of a nearby building while he was outside the event venue but could still hear the former president’s campaign speech. The man, whose identity was not revealed by the BBC, stated that he and the others he was with began pointing at the man in an attempt to alert police and security to the existence of a “guy on the roof with a rifle.”
However, no cops arrived, so the shooter fired many shots at Trump in a matter of minutes. The man told the BBC that Secret Service agents shot and “blew his head off” the attacker. According to the service, the rounds appeared to come from outside the area that the Secret Service had protected. According to the FBI, it has taken command of the investigation into the attack.
During a late-Saturday briefing, FBI officials said it was unexpected for the suspect to fire more than one shot. The Secret Service was not represented in the briefing, which also included FBI and state law enforcement officials.
