Ava’s marital life with Peter was far from perfect. They had their ups and downs, but she still couldn’t let go of him until one day she discovered he was having an affair with another lady. It was almost midnight when Peter returned home, sweaty and exhausted, claiming to be at work on a project. Ava knew he wasn’t telling the truth because he appeared distant during the last few weeks. There was more to his narrative than he wanted his wife to know.
Despite how strange it felt, Ava resolved to accompany him the next day. Her heart was beating, and she was questioning her decision, convinced herself that she should place more trust in her husband’s statements, but that seemed more difficult than it seemed. Her intuition told her that something was going on, and she wanted to be completely aware of it.
Ava felt a pit in her stomach when Peter stopped outside of his office and paused at the door of a residence. A nice-looking woman answered the door and hugged Peter. The two talked for a few minutes before he entered the building. Ava’s world was shattered into a million pieces. Peter was having an affair, which explained his seeming lack of interest in her over the last few weeks.

Heartbroken, she considered her marriage to this man she thought she knew. But at that time, he felt like a stranger, someone she’d never met before. The obvious followed. Ava decided to confront Peter, which she did when he arrived home, much later than in the past. “Are you having an affair with that woman?” Ava inquired, wanting to learn the reality, which she secretly desired was different from what she perceived.
But Peter did not even attempt to dispute it. He claimed he had fallen in love with someone else. What was supposed to be a one-night stand evolved into something deeper and more meaningful to him. He admitted that he fell in love with another woman, but he also professed to adore Ava. Unfortunately, he quickly blamed Ava for his affair, stating she was cold and unsupportive.
His words felt like a knife. Ava had had enough. When he stopped talking, she remarked, “Peter, I want a divorce.” But Peter was opposed to that decision. He didn’t want to divorce Ava, despite being in love with someone else. He began yelling at her, threatening her, and said he would never sign divorce papers. That evening, Ava could not stop crying. She believed there was no way out of the mess she had found herself in.

She could never have imagined living with Peter under the same roof while knowing he had emotions for someone else. As she rested her head on the pillow, tears streaming down her cheeks, she heard Peter’s footsteps and the sound of a door closing. The next morning, he was not in their bed. She looked around the house, but Peter was gone. At that moment, her gaze was drawn to the safe. Something drove her to open it, but it was entirely empty.
Money, jewels, and his passport. It was completely gone. Confused, she started the car and proceeded to Peter’s mother’s house. Martha stood at the door, blaming Ava for her son’s decision to leave the nation. “If not for you and your idiotic demand for divorce, none of this would have happened. Martha cried, “You ruined your marriage and chased my son away.”
Ava couldn’t believe what she was hearing, so she questioned Martha whether she knew Peter was having an affair. “So, what?” Martha said. “You should have never tell my son you wanted to divorce hi, this is all on you.” Ava returned home, realizing that Martha couldn’t help her. She was met by an unusual quiet. Everything in the house she shared with Peter felt like it was never hers. She felt like an intruder in her own house.
Days passed, and there was no trace of Peter. His phone was turned off, and he had not responded to any of Ava’s emails. She began to lose hope of ever seeing him again, and she was eager for closure. Then, while she was flipping through the TV stations, she heard the news that left her completely stunned. A plane crashed, and Peter’s name, as well as that of his lover, appeared on the list of those murdered.

Ava could not believe her ears. Peter was dead. Someone knocked on the door while she was trying to calm herself. Martha was crying and blaming Ava for his son’s death. Fast forward to the present day, around two years after the horrific incident, Ava felt she needed a change and traveled to a nearby city. The afternoon was peaceful, so she went grocery shopping, never expecting her life to change again.
While examining the label of a product she was apprehensive to buy, she noticed a familiar face. Her heart began beating as she noticed how much the man standing nearby resembled Peter. “Peter…” she muttered, but the man did not answer. That likeness was too remarkable to be a mere coincidence. With her legs wobbling, she decided to follow him, where she noticed Martha just around one of the aisles.
What was going on? How could any of this be true? Ava was completely disbelieving. She called out Peter’s name, and he turned around. He looked straight into Ava’s eyes and said, “I can explain everything.” He persuaded Ava to get in his car, offering to tell her the entire story. She reluctantly consented. As the three traveled to Peter’s house, he told Ava that he was involved in the plane crash and that his sweetheart perished, but he escaped and managed to flee, creating a new identity for himself with the money he stole from Ava. He then made sure to get tickets for his mother, who assisted him in restarting his life.

Ava recalled her weeping and the anguish she had experienced after learning of Peter’s death. While she was grieving his loss, he was living life to the fullest. Ava felt betrayed and like a complete idiot. She began yelling at Peter, who attempted to calm her down. He invited her to enter his home while instructing his mother to wait inside the car.
Ava was perplexed; she didn’t know what to do, but she was already at a place she had never been before and had no idea how to get back to her hotel, so she accepted to go inside the house. But Peter became violent. He did not want his secret revealed. He was well aware that if Ava talked, he would be imprisoned, and he had gone a long way to allow such an outcome.
As he yelled and threatened, he took a hefty weapon and struck Ava in the head. She lost consciousness, and when she regained it, she discovered she was confined in the basement. Her calls for aid could not be heard, and she was losing all of her energy. She begged Peter to let her leave, assuring him that she would never report him to the authorities, but he did not trust her.
After a few days, Martha entered the basement. She told Ava that she would let her go if she vowed not to damage Peter in any manner. All Ava wanted was to return home; she no longer cared about Peter, and she promised Martha that she would never tell anyone he was alive. Martha knew her son would get into trouble with Ava in the house, so she let her go.

Ava hurried to Peter’s car and started it. Martha hurried after her, telling her to get out of the car and go to the nearest road, but Ava drove as quickly as she could. Unfortunately, she was too feeble to make it far. She felt ill while driving and crashed into a tree. She then lost consciousness, and the next thing she remembered was being in a hospital bed, with an officer waiting for her to wake up so he could interrogate her about the accident and Peter, whom they had been able to locate thanks to the car’s license plates.
“He has been living under a fictitious identity. Following the purported plane tragedy, he adopted a new name. Officer Daniels told Ava that they were still working on putting all of the pieces together. She informed him that she believed he had died in the plane disaster and told him everything she knew. Her testimony was the first step towards putting Peter in jail.
“The case is difficult, but your testimony lays a solid foundation. George faces possible prison time for his acts, and Martha is being probed for her position as an accomplice.” Ava was relieved. She could finally start afresh and leave the past behind.
