My mother-in-law prepared a large dinner with 12 guests for my son’s seventh birthday and promised to offer non-meat options for me (I am vegetarian). There was plenty of food at supper, but I only ate cheese cubes and bread.
She smirked and asked in front of everyone, “Isn’t this what you eat anyway?” I became outraged upon hearing her statements. I made a sign for my son, took his hand, and left the celebration. My hubby stayed there.

Later, he contacted me, saying, “Do not expect me to come home tonight. You mistreated my mother and ruined my son’s birthday for him. He stayed at his mother’s place and returned home the next day, but it’s been a week and we’re still avoiding one other.
I am confident that what I did was correct since I felt deeply mistreated. She chose to insult me for being a vegetarian, which I had been since I was 12, rather than simply allowing me to bring my own food.
What do you think I should do?
