I Took Back My Tip After Dealing with the Waiter’s Rude Attitude

We’ve all been there – a nice evening out to mark a special occasion, only to have it marred by an unpleasant encounter. Amelia’s letter detailing her recent restaurant experience raises important questions about tipping etiquette, customer service, and how to navigate conflict. Last night, my husband and I decided to celebrate his big promotion by treating ourselves to a lovely dinner at a nice restaurant. Everything was going smoothly until the very end, when the waitress’s entitled attitude completely spoiled the experience.

After receiving the check, I decided to leave a generous $10 tip on top of the $85 bill. As the waitress collected the payment, she exclaimed with a hint of disdain, “Just ten dollars?” Times have changed, you know.  I was absolutely blown away. She had a very unpleasant and disrespectful tone. My husband’s eyes widened in sheer astonishment. “Um, sorry to bother you?” I muttered, instantly irritated. “I believe that $10 on a $85 bill is a reasonable amount.”

The waitress responded with an exaggerated eye roll. “It seems that a 20% tip is the norm nowadays, my friend.” Don’t you have any idea how to calculate that? I was taken aback by her condescending demeanor. The $10 tip was more than 11%, which is considered a generous tip in any situation. I found her sense of entitlement quite bothersome. “You know what,” I exclaimed, losing my composure. “Given your unpleasant demeanor, it’s clear that you don’t warrant receiving a tip.”

I quickly reached over and grabbed the $10 bill from the table. The waitress was taken aback, and she began to express her displeasure in a very vocal and disrespectful manner, hurling insults and creating quite a commotion. Curious onlookers couldn’t help but stare at the scene unfolding before them. My husband felt a sense of embarrassment.

Eventually, the manager had to intervene and forcefully escort the unruly waitress away, as she continued to shout at me. Unfortunately, we had no choice but to leave without leaving a tip. I must confess that I may have overreacted, but her smug and condescending behavior really got under my skin. After treating a customer with such disrespect, it’s hard to argue that she deserved anything extra. However, I’m facing intense debates from others regarding whether I should have simply ignored it instead of causing a commotion.
