Our Parents Aren’t Superheroes

My father never liked my spouse. He felt I deserved a better man. On our wedding day, he seemed apprehensive and constantly questioned me, “Are you certain this is what you want?””Are you certain he is the one?” I replied, “One day, you, too, will see his good side!” He nodded.

Last week, Dad had a stroke. When I told my husband, he was at work, getting ready for an important meeting. He canceled it and rushed to my side, assuring that my family and I were fully supported.

Later, I visited my parents’ house to retrieve some of my father’s items for the hospital. When I opened his drawer, I was surprised to find so many photos of my husband alongside those of our children.

I know how much Dad valued photographs and kept the ones he liked close to him. That showed me that, over time, he had come to tolerate and even love my marriage. I am relieved to hear that Dad’s intuition was erroneous after all.
