The Painful Discovery Behind My Husband’s Dinner Invitations

Just as Mandy and Jack want, their marriage is childless and easygoing. They had several group dates and escapades with Jack’s childhood friends. But Mandy finds Jack has been excluding her from occasions. Who or what causes? Learn more… Jack and I’s nine-year marriage was full of love, dreams, and experiences. However, three months ago, everything changed.

Before then, we always went to work or his friends’ functions together. Before we were married, Jack and his mates were on the same football team since high school.Jack recently made many excuses for leaving me at home for these occasions. “It’s just the guys, Mandy,” he said while dressing. “Do you really want to sit around in their company without the wives?”

Fair enough—that sounded awful. Even though our friends were like family, I knew a night with only the males would entail drinking, wings, cards, and maybe a cigar. It wasn’t a good use of my time without the wives. Jack’s narrative seemed true to me. I figured the spouses would have been busy with their children since most couples had kids.

However, I ran into Kevin’s wife at the grocery store. Kevin was one of Jack’s oldest pals, and we often saw him and Marcia. Until they had twins and we only met at group functions. She embraced me from behind, “Mandy!” “Are you alright, dear?” “I’m fine,” I smiled at her shopping cart’s twin toddlers. “I haven’t seen you in ages!”She embraced me from behind, “Mandy!” “Are you alright, dear?”

“I’m fine,” I smiled at her shopping cart’s twin toddlers. “I haven’t seen you in ages!”I said, “It took a while for my body to adjust,” lying through my teeth. “I hope this means that we’ll see you for the next dinner!” remarked. “I’ve missed having you around as my silent judging partner of all the other women.” Dinner next? My thoughts. What else was missed?”You should have seen some of the outfits that the other wives wore during the poker night two weeks ago!”

A laughing Marcia exclaimed. “I was going to call you later that night and tell you everything, but something must have come up.” I grinned at her. To my dismay, I realized that Jack had feed Marcia what she told me.”You feel good? Everything IVF?” she inquired while gathering bananas. “Yes,” I answered. “I think my body just needed a minute to catch up.”

I didn’t know much about IVF, so I didn’t know if my words made sense. Why my husband lied was equally unclear. It didn’t make sense if he wanted kids finally. It made no sense. Why would Jack tell his friends we were pregnant? I said, “He just doesn’t want you there,” as I approached the checkout. My ride home was a blur, tears flowing down my face as I wondered what was happening.

Nothing made sense to me.Sitting on the living room couch, I attempted to think of all the reasons my husband wouldn’t want me there. Did he take another? — It would be too hazardous. Getting caught red-handed was his prediction. One wife would have let it slip. I played detective to find out what happened.Sitting on my laptop, I checked Jack and my calendar, which frequently received invites for group events. A Friday night dinner invitation with “wives included” appeared.

I assumed Jack deleted prior invites he had attended alone. After seeing that the RSVP wasn’t done, I RSVP’d for us both and removed it from our calendar. I surprised Jack with it during supper. “Date night, my love,” I said, dressing and makeup-ing. “Fancy dinner?” he inquired, inspecting my clothes. “Yes! We rarely dress up. So let’s proceed. Photograph and enjoy the evening.”

Jack’s brows furrowed in perplexity as I guided him as we drove. After arriving at the restaurant to an unsettling stillness from our guests, my husband’s uncertainty turned to shock. But the shock was mine. Jack’s ex-girlfriend Sasha was there as the wife of one of his best friends, sitting among the familiar people. Dinner was a whirl of awkward glances and stilted conversation. While eating fish, Sasha’s weird stares made my stomach turn. And Jack’s.She addressed him whenever she spoke.

Not sure what to think. Why had Jack kept Sasha’s marriage to one of the boys a secret from me all this time? She had every right to be in the group as a wife. Why would Jack lie to me? I thought about everything, including my husband having an affair with his ex-girlfriend. Drive home was filled with anticipation of the truth—from both ends. Jack demanded the truth about how we got to supper. I wanted to know why he was keeping me in the dark. Not to mention the IVF realities.

“Mandy,” he began slowly, apparently selecting his words carefully. “Sasha joined recently. The city hall registered her and Mark’s marriage. “She’s back,” he said.”Why didn’t you tell me?” I requested. “Sasha advised me to separate you two from the happenings. When did you last see each other?” At our last meeting, Sasha tried to trip me at a wedding rehearsal dinner. She’s petty.”She said that it made more sense for her to be a part of the group because she was in school with the rest of us, too.”

Which was their date. “I don’t understand why you couldn’t have just told me that, Jack,” I add. “Why let her choose? We’ve become friendly even though most of the wives weren’t in school with your friends.” Jack clenched the steering wheel silently.I should have been informed first. You should have let me choose to see Sasha’s pettiness.” “Or is there something else going on?” I requested. “You and Sasha—”

I was interrupted before I could finish my sentence. “No! Mandy, no! He yelled, “No way!” When we got home, I washed my face and found Jack brewing me green tea, my bedtime habit.”I’m sorry,” he repeated. “We have something else to talk about,” I add. He sipped his tea and asked, “Yeah?” “Why did you tell Marcia about IVF?” I ask. “I don’t know,” he said. “I heard something about it on the radio, and when I saw them all and they asked about you, it just came out of my mouth.”

He made me laugh with his response. “There’s nothing more to the story?” I wanted to clarify the child issue. Jack and I had discussed it hundreds of times, but we both liked our lives as they were. We also agreed to adopt a child if we became parents. “No,” Jack said, happier. “We’re still on the same page.” I slept thinking about everything said that night. I understood why Jack wanted to protect me from Sasha—she was odd and loved to mock me whenever we met.I didn’t understand why she split up with Jack because he knew he didn’t want children—biological, adopted, or pets.

“It was a big deal for her, Mandy,” he added when we first discussed our ex-lovers. “She always wanted to be a mom.” Even though Jack had vowed not to hide anything, I pondered what might happen at the next event while I laid in bed. “I’m pretty sure Marcia will tell you anyway,” he laughed. “Did you see how excited she was to see you?” I can’t figure out Jack’s IVF lie, the only thing left.
