I pledged to pay for my niece’s wedding outfit, but instantly hesitated after hearing her phone call.

Meghan was only ten years old when she lost both her parents. Life seemed difficult, and she was far too little to comprehend the gravity of the loss, but thankfully, her uncle Tim was there for her. Not having children on his own, he made it his mission to raise Meghan properly and be available to her anytime she needed him.
One day, during a chat regarding Meghan’s future, Tim stated that when the wedding day arrives, he will be the one to purchase the wedding gown for her. Her small face lit up with joy. She was fortunate to have such an excellent uncle.

Twenty years later, Meghan is a mother of three beautiful children. She and her partner Tyler, despite being very much in love, have yet to marry owing to various circumstances. Tyler eventually proposed, and Meghan was overjoyed. Their union was finally going to be officially recognized. Meghan had always wanted to have a large wedding, and the prospect of being a bride filled her heart with delight. She and Tyler were rushing to inform her uncle Tim. Tim, as predicted, was as excited as the future husband and wife.

Meghan recounted a promise Tim made to her when she was very little as they were discussing their plans with him. “Uncle Tim, you’re buying my dress, correct? “I am sure you remember what you promised,” Meghan responded. “Of course, I remember,” Tim exclaimed with pleasure. “I’d be delighted to see you happy, Meghan. So, what do you both have in mind? “A small gathering, I suppose,” Tim inquired.

“Well, not exactly,” Meghan replied shyly. “Uncle Tim, we were hoping to have a big and glamorous wedding.”Meghan then informed Tim that she had discovered the perfect site, as well as the perfect outfit. She spotted it in a magazine and felt it was right for her. The trouble was, the gown cost $7,500. Tim was astounded by the price of the dress. “Meghan, I don’t know how to say this, but that dress costs way too much,” he told her. “I was thinking of a dress in the range of around $1,500.”

Meghan’s face flushed red. It was clear that her uncle’s attitude had devastated her. “But you promised,” she said repeatedly. Tyler also tried to get Tim to spend more money on his niece’s wedding dress, but Tim declined since he thought spending so much money on a dress was ludicrous. The room felt quiet. Before Meghan and Tyler left, Tim advised them to think about his offer because he was still willing to pay $1,500 for her dress. Meghan did not say anything; she simply waved goodbye and departed.

A few days later, Meghan paid a visit to her uncle. He was in the garage and noticed her conversing on the phone before entering the home. However, she failed to see Tim, who had overheard her chat. “Tyler, I know it’s not as much as we expected, but Uncle Tim is still going to give me money for the dress,” Meghan was heard saying. “Yes, I will use that money for your car’s repairs, I told you I will help you with that.”

Tim was shocked. Meghan had no intention of using his money to buy a wedding dress. Did he hear it correctly? “He doesn’t know I already spent my parents’ trust fund on your car,” says Megan. “It’ll be easy, trust me.” Meghan’s remarks felt like a punch in the stomach. The trust fund her parents left behind was intended to support her with her college education, which Tim paid for until she became pregnant with her first child and dropped out. She could put that money towards her future, not her boyfriend’s car. What were her thoughts?

She was even attempting to defraud the only person who was there for her after her parents died.Tim stepped out of the garage and looked directly at Meghan, his heart full of mixed emotions. “Meghan, I overheard your conversation,” he said in an angry tone. “How could you have spent your parents’ trust fund like that? And you don’t intend to buy the beautiful gown you want me to pay for?”

“Uncle Tim, it’s not what you think—” Meghan attempted to explain. But Tim refused to listen to her excuses. “I’m not paying for the dress,” Tim stated firmly. “And I’m not giving you a dime for the wedding.” Meghan grabbed her purse and exited the building. She was unable to look her uncle in the face. She knew she had made a mistake, but days passed without her reaching out to him to ask for forgiveness.

Months passed with neither Meghan nor Tyler reaching out to Tim. Most importantly, he learnt that they married at the courthouse in front of a small group of people. Tim wasn’t one of them because he hadn’t been invited. Tim regretted not attending Meghan’s wedding more than he cared to admit. His relationship with his niece had ended, most likely permanently. He was still willing to accept her apology, but she did not provide one. No matter how difficult it was, Tim understood it was a lesson to be more cautious with his trust in others and his generosity, even with family members.
