A 60-year-old woman shared a tragic story about her family with our editorial board. She described how her daughter-in-law frequently made fun of her, insulting and mocking her. But this astute woman taught her daughter-in-law a valuable lesson. Andrea, a 60-year-old widow, revealed her tragic experience. Her husband, Alex, passed away three years ago. Her son, Robert, is 30 years old and extremely successful, with a great home, a fancy car, and a high income. Andrea worried that he was too busy. with work to have a family, but he had a 28-year-old girlfriend named Jessica.
Andrea wrote, “They had been together for a year before Robert introduced Jessica to me and asked for my approval because they were engaged.” I was outraged that they were engaged before I even met her, but I kept it quiet because Robert is an adult.” Andrea’s first meeting did not go as expected. Jessica showed up, boasting about her education and history. Andrea remained relatively mute, although she felt her son’s decision was wrong.

Andrea explained, “Jessica did not love my son; she enjoyed his money and the lifestyle he afforded. When I asked if she wanted children, she laughed and said, “You must be joking, Andrea!” I want to enjoy life, but children would wreck it! Andrea never told Robert how she felt about Jessica. Jessica was kind with Robert but harsh to Andrea when he was not present. Andrea hoped Robert would see his mistake on his own.
Jessica came by about a week before the wedding to pick up one of her three wedding outfits. Andrea questioned whether three outfits were really required, especially since neither Jessica nor her parents were paying for the wedding—Robert was responsible for everything. Jessica became angry. When Robert left the room, Jessica criticized Andrea, calling her a “uneducated, shallow person” and said she was embarrassed by her. She even said Andrea shouldn’t attend the wedding.
Andrea continued to attend the wedding. She planned to deliver a speech, not to celebrate, but to teach Jessica a lesson. Andrea, the groom’s mother, seized the microphone and announced, “Today, my son is being married. As his mother, I should let him leave. But, as his boss, I am announcing that I am firing him. I don’t agree with his choice because his new wife has repeatedly humiliated me.”

Everyone was in shock. Jessica was upset and began questioning Robert. That’s when Robert confessed that Andrea was the chairperson of the company where he worked. After Alex died, Andrea took over the company and became Robert’s employer. Robert was surprised when he learned how Jessica had treated his mother. When he approached Jessica, she denied it but then made a harsh comment about Andrea’s schooling.
Robert was upset by her remark and called off the wedding. Jessica became upset and displayed her true colors, insulting Robert as well, but was forced to leave. Robert and his mother are now working together to operate Alex’s company. Robert is dating a new person, and Andrea hopes she will not have to teach any more lessons. She simply wants her son to be happy.
