In 2020, an Amazon employee emailed Jeff Bezos, stating that she had been underpaid while on medical leave. Her proposal sent the corporation on a mission to remedy the injustice and prompted an internal probe. However, she is not the only employee who was wrongly terminated or underpaid.Tara Jones, a young mother, contacted Jeff Bezos via email in 2020, appealing with him after the Amazon employee was shorted $90 on her $540 check.
“I’m behind on bills, all because the pay team messed up.” She wrote. “I’m crying as I write this email.”Tara was on maternity leave at home, caring for her newborn child. While many may be surprised, Jeff Bezos took her email seriously and requested an internal inquiry. Unfortunately, the study uncovered multiple errors, at the expense of Amazon employees worldwide.

According to the study, a system problem affected up to 179 warehouses, resulting in countless Amazon employees being unfairly sacked or underpaid.Amazon employees on disability or medical leave were the most affected. Furthermore, this blunder occurred over a year and a half, causing significant financial losses for Amazon employees. For example, another James Watts was unable to pay their medical expenses and food, lost their automobile, and had to sell wedding jewelry to recoup from the system malfunction.
Meanwhile, some Amazon employees were fired because the system marked them as no-shows rather than being on leave. Furthermore, despite manager protests, no adjustments were implemented. The Times contacted Amazon employees at the time and obtained internal papers that confirmed their accounts. Furthermore, the Times met with an Amazon representative, who indicated that it takes some time to filter through and determine which Amazon employees were affected.
“We are disappointed anytime any of our employees have a problem with their leave. The restrictions we’ve introduced over the last 18 months have resulted in less than 1% of persons having a problem while on paid leave.” They made a statement. “Certainly, the unprecedented nature of Covid did put a strain on our system’s ability to keep pace with demand and we’ve been hard at work investing and inventing to do better every day.”Bethany Reyes, an Amazon HR employee, was assigned the duty of “fixing the company’s system.” She stated that Amazon will “rebalance its mantra.”
“A lot of times, because we’ve optimized for the customer experience, we’ve been focused on that,” she added, adding that the company was dealing with “pain points” and “payment issues.” Furthermore, she stated that automatic firing was “the most dire issue that you could have.”

Bezos is no longer CEO, but he is still the company’s chairman. Jeff, on the other hand, has been chastised for his treatment of Amazon employees, who number in the millions. Unsurprisingly, some internet users expressed their discontent with how Amazon treats its employees. “This is inexcusable.” One user stated it plainly.
“But Jeff is busy in space tourism ignoring the problems on Earth.” I wrote another. “Seriously, wowww come on back to Earth Jeff…” A third, sarcastically added. Meanwhile, a fourth individual revealed a personal detail about someone they know. “I know someone who was fired from a job she liked because Amazon’s software detected ‘no show’ or ‘lateness’ in the two weeks following an abortion and unexpected issues. Her manager’s concerns were dismissed by the Amazon machine.” They wrote.
