A Quick and Easy Solution for a Common Kitchen Problem with a $2 Pot Holder

Learn how to quickly create a DIY bowl cozy from a $2 hot pad. If you use your microwave frequently, you’ve definitely experienced the “hot bowl” phenomenon, which occurs while attempting to remove a dish loaded with hot food from the microwave and onto the counter. However, I only needed a large $2 rectangle heating pad from Walmart to solve the problem!

These are suitable for bowls of several sizes. All you need to do is hold the ends together so that the bowl can sit comfortably inside. You can fasten them with a needle and thread, or a sewing machine if you want. I also used a hot glue gun, which appeared to work, but I recommend testing it on another piece of fabric first. Mark where you’ll tack the hot pad together. This is a little over 1 inch up from the fold.

Make sure the correct side of the hot pad is inside where the bowl will sit, and then use a strong needle to sew it together with multiple stitches. To ensure a good hold, put about a dozen stitches over the same area. You could also use HOT GLUE, however, I am not sure how well it will stand up over time. Make SURE that the glue does not become hot when placed in the microwave.

Fits various bowl sizes. I decided I wanted to make it seem better, so I grabbed some ribbon that I had sitting around. NOTE: Heavy ribbon can be used to actually TIE IT TOGETHER without stitching or adhesive. I recommend grosgrain ribbon at least 1/2 inch wide. I added ribbon to one I had sewn simply because it looked better.
