My mom called me from her honeymoon and begged me to save her from her new husband.

When my mother called me from her honeymoon and begged me to save her from her new husband, I assumed she was in serious danger. Nothing could have prepared me for what she said or how I had to intervene to correct it. I’ve always been close to my mother, Diane. She’s been my rock, best friend, and the one who taught me all I know about love and resilience. But after my father died ten years ago, things changed. She became quiet and withdrawn, a shadow of the bright lady she once was. She rarely called or texted anymore, and whenever I tried to check in, she insisted she was fine.

However, I could see she wasn’t. I couldn’t handle it anymore. I called her and asked, “Mom, why don’t you come stay with me for a while?” It’s going to be enjoyable. We can binge-watch your favorite cooking shows and eat way too much ice cream. She initially resisted, but after some coaxing, she eventually accepted. A week later, she moved into my guest room, and I resolved to bring her back to life. I began urging her to go out of the house, meet new people, and attend neighborhood events. “You’re still young, Mom,” I reminded her. “You deserve to have a good time and meet new people. Dad would prefer that for you.” To be honest, it was not the easiest thing to do.

She’d sigh and roll her eyes anytime I mentioned going to a reading club or joining a gardening group. She gradually started saying yes. I gradually watched the spark return to her eyes. She began laughing more, talking about her new acquaintances, and even resuming some of her previous interests. I was so glad to see this side of her again. Then, approximately a year ago, Mom informed me about Nick. She invited him over to lunch one day. “He’s just a friend,” she responded, but the way her cheeks flushed told me differently.

Nick was a tall, silver-haired man with gentle eyes and a quiet manner. He appeared kind, the type of man who would hold doors open and always say please and thank you. After he went, I couldn’t stop taunting her. “So, Mom, is Nick really just a friend, or is there more to the story?” Her flush deepened. “So, umm… She said, “He’s my boyfriend. “OMG, what?” I glanced at her with wide eyes. “Mom! “You never told me about him.” “I didn’t know how to…” she said. “I mean—” “I’m so happy for you, Mom!” I cut her off and drew her into a hug. “That’s so, so amazing!”

“But, uh,” she began. “Do you think this is okay? Is it okay to date someone after losing your father?”Of course, it’s fine, Mom,” I said, placing my hands on her shoulders. “You deserve to be happy. Think of Dad. He always wanted you to be happy, right? He would urge you to move forward and accomplish things in life. You can’t put your life on wait indefinitely, right? Her eyes gleamed as she nodded. “You’re correct. “I just hope I am doing the right thing.” “You are,” I replied firmly. “Nick seems like a lovely guy. And you can get a second chance at happiness.”

She fully committed to her relationship with Nick after that. They dated for a while, and when he proposed, she accepted. Their wedding ceremony was tiny but beautiful, full of love and laughter. As I watched my mother walk down the aisle, I thought to myself, “Maybe this is her happily ever after.” And for a while, it appeared like everything was perfect. But then I got a phone call that sent shivers down my spine. So, following their wedding, Mom and Nick went on their honeymoon in the Florida Keys. It was Mom’s ideal trip, and she deserved every moment of it.

I felt very thrilled for her. My phone rang the day after they came, and her name appeared on the screen. Naturally, I figured she was calling to gloat about how wonderful everything was. “Mom!” I responded enthusiastically. “How’s paradise?” But her weak voice on the other phone warned me that something was wrong. “Kayla,” she whispered. “Please. Come, save me from him. “I beg you.” “Mom, what’s going on?” I asked, sitting up straight. “Are you okay?” “It’s Nick,” she explained. “He’s not who I thought he was.”

My imagination raced with the worst-case scenarios. “What do you mean?” Has he done anything? Is he dangerous? I was already getting my car keys and preparing to go to Florida if necessary. She took a deep breath. “You wouldn’t believe me if I told you,” she said bitterly. “But he brought his kids and their children on our honeymoon. And he expects me to babysit them.” “Wait… what?” “He promised me a surprise yesterday,” she explained. “I expected it to be something romantic, like a sunset supper or a couples massage. Instead, his grown children arrived with their toddlers.

I couldn’t believe Nick was capable of doing something so ridiculous. “There’s four of them, Kayla. “Four,” Mom cried. “And now I’m stuck babysitting while Nick spends all his time with his kids.” “You’re telling me he brought his entire family on your honeymoon? “Without asking you?” “Yes!” she exclaimed. “And now he’s arguing that since I’m ‘the new parent,’ it’s my responsibility to help out. Help us out! On my honeymoon! “What does he think he is doing?” I could hear the frustration and tiredness in her voice. My mother, the lady who had given up everything to raise me after my father died, was treated like a nanny on what was supposed to be the best trip of her life.

I felt a wave of rage rush through my body. “That’s insane!” I snapped. “Who does he believe he is? Do not worry, Mom. I’m coming, and we’re going to put an end to this madness.” “Kayla, you don’t have to—” “No, Mom,” I said, my voice harsh. “I won’t let him treat you like this. Pack your bags. “I’ll be there by morning.”The following morning, I arrived to the resort. I was at such a gorgeous location, but I wasn’t able to relax. I went there to fight. To tell Nick that he could not mistreat my mother. To make my point more clear, I chose to embrace the absurdity of the circumstance.

Before driving to the resort, I stopped by a store to get a few props. A bright pink child’s sun hat, bib, and pacifier. If Nick wanted to make my mother into a nanny, I’d show him how ludicrous it was. When I strolled into the resort’s outside lounge, I instantly noticed Nick. He was sitting by the pool with his adult children, completely ignorant of what was coming his way. Mom was nowhere to be found, and I could only presume she was busy babysitting. I fixed my pink cap, inserted the pacifier into my mouth, and stormed up to him.

“Daddy!” I called out loudly enough for everyone to hear. “Where is Mommy?” “I want my juice box.” The expression on Nick’s face was priceless. His laughter stopped the instant he spotted me. “Kayla,” he answered. “What are you doing here?” “Saving my mom,” I murmured, pulling the pacifier from my mouth. “And calling you out on your nonsense while I’m at it.” Before he could react, I turned to face his adult children, who were now staring at me with wide eyes.

“Hi, everyone!” I said, putting on a phony smile. “I’m Kayla, Nick’s other child, allegedly. The one he omitted to mention when he invited all of you to my mother’s honeymoon and turned her into a babysitter.” His daughter stammered, “We…we didn’t mean—” “Oh, save it,” I said. “Let me guess, he told you my mother would be pleased to watch your children so you could take a nice vacation, right? Did he explain that it was meant to be her honeymoon? You know, the trip where she was meant to relax rather than change diapers?

My mother entered at that time, cradling a wailing toddler on her hip and looked as if she hadn’t slept for days. I stepped up to her and gently removed the toddler from her arms.”Here you go,” I said, returning the child to one of Nic’s kids. “I’m very confident this is yours. Perhaps you should consider caring for your own children rather than dumping them on a woman you hardly know.” “Kayla!” Nick snapped. “That is enough. “You’re causing a scene.”

“Oh, am I?” I shot back, crossing my arms. “You hauled your entire family on what was intended to be a romantic vacation with your new wife. And you’ve been treating her like a nanny rather than a relationship. “What type of man does that?” “It’s a family trip!” Nick argued. “She’s a member of the family now. Families help out. “No,” I replied firmly. “She is your wife, not your maid.” She did not sign up to spend her honeymoon babysitting. And, honestly, the fact that you believed this was OK tells me everything I need to know about you.

That was when one of Nick’s daughters began apologizing. “We didn’t mean to cause trouble,” she said. “Dad said she’d be fine with it…” “Of course, he did,” I replied coldly. “Because he didn’t bother to ask her.” The crowd gathered around the pool remained hushed as they watched the incident unfold. Nick seemed to want to disappear, but I wasn’t finished yet. “Pack your bags, Mom,” I said. “We’re leaving.”

She hesitated and looked at Nick. “But… what about—” “No,” I replied, cutting her off. “You do not owe him anything. “He disrespected you, and you deserve better.” Her eyes welled up with tears, but she simply nodded. I took her hand and walked her out of the pool area as Nick mumbled excuses. Mom remained silent for the longest period while driving home. She continued glancing out the window before finally spoke something. “Thank you, Kayla,” she replied softly. “I don’t know what I would’ve done without you.”

“You don’t have to thank me, Mom,” I said her, reaching over to squeeze her hand. “You have always been there for me. “I’m just returning the favor.” She offered me a faint, tearful grin. “I thought he loved me.” “Someone who loves you wouldn’t treat you like that,” I replied. “You deserve someone who puts you first.” “You’re right,” she said, nodding. “I’m done with Nick.” When we came home, she blocked his number and began researching into annulments. Meanwhile, karma had flipped Nick’s life upside down. His children were not pleased with being dragged into his honeymoon scheme, and they stopped speaking to dad after learning what he did.

Last I heard, he was spending his days alone, wondering what went wrong. I can’t express how relieved I am that I saved Mom from being exploited for her goodness. I’m glad she called me that day instead of quietly caring for that man’s grandchildren and putting up with his strange rationale.
