My dearest buddy asked me to babysit for an hour—she disappeared for 7 years.

I was nestled under my comforter, watching Netflix and browsing through rom-coms, the kind that makes you laugh and then weep, when my closest friend Christina arrived at my door with her baby Mike in her arms and her younger son Dylan standing next to her. “Emily, I need your help,” she began, sounding frightened and unlike the Christina I knew, who was always happy and strong as a rock. “Can you watch the kids for an hour?” I have an emergency, and I promise to be back soon.”

“Sure, Chris,” I replied. But what’s wrong? Is there anything else I can help you with?””No, just look after the kids until I return.” The three of us watched my closest buddy leave, not realizing that the hour would stretch into days, weeks, months, and years. Hours passed, and I became worried sick about my pal. I knew she wouldn’t abandon her children, or so I assumed, so I contacted the police and filed a missing person report.

Despite their best efforts, authorities were unable to locate Christina. I could not comprehend why she did what she did. She was not the type of person to abandon her children like that.As time passed, I realized the children needed someone to rely on, and they ultimately began calling me “mom,” which seemed both natural and deep. I adopted Mike and Dylan because I didn’t want them to end up in a shelter or a foster family.

They became my universe. Everything in my life revolved on these two individuals, whose mother abandoned them and never returned. Then, seven years later, on vacation, fate interfered. Walking along the beach, Dylan grabbed my hand and whispered, “Mom, there she is,” pointing to a woman in the distance.I looked at her and recognized Christina, my best friend. She appeared older and sickly, but it was clearly her.

Dylan dashed towards her, and Mike and I followed. “Why did you leave us?” he asked her, his eyes filled with sadness. I was eager to hear her response, but Christina pretended she had no idea who we were, which seemed like the ultimate betrayal. Her voice was chilly and distant, and I didn’t recognize the lady who had previously been like a sister to me.Without saying anything, I took Dylan by the hand and informed him we had to leave.

That woman was not worth that young boy’s tears.Once at the hotel, Christina reappeared. It turns out that she worked as a cleaner there. This time I confronted her.
“Christina, how could you do this to me?” You abandoned your children and never looked back. Don’t you notice the pain in their eyes? “They missed you and cried for you for months…,” I continued, feeling angry and threatened.

She was overcome with embarrassment as she stared at the floor, unable to raise her head. Caring for her children was a heavy burden for her, and she believed they would be better off without her. And perhaps, just maybe, she was correct, since no child deserves a mother who gives up on them so quickly.
Christina tried to communicate with her children, but they refused to listen. The seven years without her felt like an eternity, and they no longer regarded her as their mother.

Dylan handed her a dollar before closing the door, demonstrating his calm resilience. “We’ll clean the room ourselves,” he replied calmly, as anguish settled in his young heart. The incident with my best buddy became a chapter that we all wanted to forget and move on from.
