Haluski: Polish Cabbage, Onions, And Noodles

You would not think of this as anything unique, just noodles, onions, and cabbage sautéed in butter, but sometimes the most basic ingredients can yield the most extraordinary results. Many people refer to our cabbage and noodles recipe as haluski, a meal that originated in Eastern Europe. Some of you may be familiar with this dish as a traditional or regional food that is frequently served as a simple dinner or at certain times of year. Haluski is one of those traditional “Grandma Recipes” that will not quickly be forgotten since it is simply delicious!

Haluski is an excellent example of simple components coming together to create something very spectacular. While this is usually served with homemade noodles, a bag of egg noodles is a terrific shortcut that gets the dish on the table faster. We have some cabbage and onion that need to be used up before they go bad, so we cut them up and combine them with a generous amount of butter. The butter will make a very simple sauce, which we will season to taste with salt and pepper. And that’s it! Besides, anything thrown in warm butter will be wonderful!

Haluski is plain, yet one mouthful will have you hooked! The onions are just slightly caramelized and infuse the cabbage with savory flavor, the cabbage softens beautifully while still retaining a little crisp, and the noodles add some structure. That is it! Cabbage, onions, butter, and noodles. But with a dish like this, seasoning is essential, and it’s as basic as salt and pepper. You will add extra of each to taste. Good food does not require fancy ingredients, and a plain dish like cabbage, onions, and noodles (also known as haluski) is an excellent example of how to use simple components to create delicious food.
