I refused to cancel my birthday, despite a family loss.

My sister’s teenage daughter died abruptly two days before my 40th birthday. She urged me to cancel my huge party, but I answered, “I’m sorry, but I’ve already sent the invites and spent a lot of money!”

She was infuriated. During the party, I checked on my baby and discovered she wasn’t present. I froze in horror when I discovered a note with only two words: “Sorry now?”

Panicked, I started looking for my baby everywhere, crying as the celebration came apart. Finally, I noticed my sister standing in the corner of the lawn, carrying my baby. When she saw me, she grinned. She appeared to be on the edge of a nervous breakdown, but I also saw dread and anger in her eyes.

She informed me, in front of all the visitors, that I was a bad sister who deserved neither her nor her family. She then went, leaving my kid on the grass and instructing me not to contact her again. I stand by my decision. Canceling my milestone birthday celebration, especially after spending so much money, made no sense to me.
