A Bold Choice: Opera on The Voice

“Largo Al Factotum” is one of opera’s most challenging and recognizable baritone arias. Sung by the character Figaro, the aria is full of rapid-fire phrasing, demanding breath control, and energetic expressions. For many singers, it represents a vocal marathon, requiring both technical prowess and the ability to convey the comedic and larger-than-life personality of Figaro.

Choosing such a piece for a blind audition on The Voice was a bold, unexpected move by Andrew Taylor Knight. In a competition where pop, rock, and R&B are the genres of choice, bringing opera to the stage requires not only immense vocal talent but also the courage to step out of the conventional. Andrew did exactly that, and the results were nothing short of astonishing.

Andrew’s Captivating Performance. From the moment Andrew began the iconic “Figaro, Figaro, Figaro” runs, the coaches knew they were witnessing something extraordinary. His voice immediately commanded attention—rich, powerful, and filled with the precision needed to execute Rossini’s famously tricky passages.

What made the performance even more compelling was his ability to infuse the aria with personality. Figaro is a witty, mischievous character, and Andrew brought those elements to life with his animated delivery, body language, and charismatic stage presence.
