A bold couple who decided to acquire an abandoned house for renovation without entering has astonished the internet with their findings. While they had intended to repair the dilapidated property, they were completely unprepared for the unexpected discoveries inside. Ray, 57, and Tracey, 53, a Chicago couple, were drawn to the lakefront appeal of New Buffalo, Michigan, where they bought a second house several years ago.
Three years ago, they realized the house next door had been abandoned. Instead than letting it deteriorate, they opted to restore it.Tracey told Newsweek about their penchant for remodeling, revealing that they had previously purchased and refurbished numerous properties in New Buffalo. But this project presented a unique challenge: they had never set foot inside the property. To make the house their own, they had to buy it without first seeing it.
“The seller wouldn’t allow us to go inside the house, show us pictures, or tell us anything as far as floor plan, number of beds, baths,” Tracey told me.To add to the intrigue, all of the windows and doors were completely sealed, leaving the buyers with no idea what to expect. Tracey explained that, while they had no idea what the inside of the house looked like, the outstanding lakeside location made the property too valuable to ignore.
They were also determined to stop anyone from dismantling it and erecting a new structure adjacent to their home.Purchasing the abandoned house for repair without an inspection was a risky decision that they wished had been avoided. Their first glance inside occurred on December 14, 2024, when they took up the keys, signaling the beginning of their remodeling odyssey.
When Ray and Tracey unlocked the front door, their excitement rapidly turned to unease. The situation within was overwhelming. The house was filled with abandoned possessions, personal objects strewn around, and disorder. Tracey said the property appeared to have been ransacked.As they examined the lakeside home, they discovered neglected rooms filled with out-of-date furniture, heaps of boxes containing forgotten belongings, and even a hidden attic that had been walled off and unused.
The couple’s decision to purchase the abandoned mansion for repair proved to be a big task. Their initial investigation showed major concerns, such as mold and pervasive wetness. They’ve started cleaning out the interior as the first step in a full refurbishment.
The massive restoration would take at least six months to complete, transforming the property into a modern and living place.”We hope to keep as much of the original structure as possible, but a lot depends on what we find when we open up the walls,” Tracey explained, adding that the house had severe water damage, which was to be expected given that the roof was covered by a tarp.
The couple used TikTok to chronicle their unusual experience of buying a house without previously seeing it. Their films immediately acquired traction, attracting a considerable audience. The first clip, which showed the property’s chaotic state when they arrived, went viral, garnering over 2 million views and 74,000 likes.They accompanied the viral video with a joking caption recognizing the challenge: “We may have bitten off more than we can chew.”
