Tsunami Warning As 7.6-magnitude Earthquake Strikes In Major Travel Destination

According to the German Research Center for Geosciences, a massive 7.6-magnitude earthquake struck the Caribbean on Saturday, just north of Honduras.According to the US Geological Survey, the earthquake struck at 6:23 p.m. EST. After the earthquake, the US Tsunami Warning System issued advisories for the Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico.

However, the National Weather Service of San Juan rescinded the tsunami advisory for the relevant regions at 8:13 p.m. After initially calculating the magnitude of the massive Caribbean earthquake as 6.89, GFZ confirmed that it occurred at a depth of 6.21 miles. Following the earthquake, the US Tsunami Warning System issued several warnings, including one for the Caribbean Sea and an area just north of Honduras.

Following the earthquake, a tsunami warning was issued for Puerto Rico and the US Virgin Islands, however it was later rescinded due to the likelihood that sea level changes and violent ocean currents could have posed a risk to beaches, harbors, and coastal waters.Residents of Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands should continue to stay away from the water, beaches, harbors, marinas, bays, and inlets.

The story is continually evolving.
