I Refused to Pay for Someone Else’s Birthday Dinner, and Now I’m the Villain

Splitting the bill at a dinner invitation can be a sensitive subject. Stella’s position took an unexpected turn at her colleague’s birthday celebrations. After delivering a beautiful present, she was taken aback when asked to pay for her portion of the tab. Stella declined to donate because she felt it was unjust. What began as a little quarrel quickly grew into workplace drama, transforming a personal matter into a much broader conflict.

My husband and I were invited to my colleague’s birthday party at a fancy restaurant. After I got home, I received a text from my coworker saying, “Thank you for coming! Your part of the cost is $190 plus tip.” I was upset, but I calmly responded: “I think the nice gift I gave you already covered my part ;).” The true shock came the following day at work. As soon as I went in, I noticed people gazing.

Another colleague hurried up to me and exclaimed, “Can you believe it?” One of the females refused to pay for her portion of the dinner yesterday! “What a cheapskate!” I kept silent and did not expose my identity. Then I was astonished to find the gift I had given her sitting on my desk. She’d returned it! I still believe she violated proper decorum. You can’t expect them to bring a present or pay for an expensive supper if you’re the one inviting them.
