I am 25 years old and work as a lawyer, however I am currently involved in a significant issue with my family. My older sister (27) has never had a real career and has always been financially dependent on our parents. Now, they’ve chosen to purchase her a house to “secure her future” and have asked me to co-sign her mortgage because I’m financially comfortable.
I refused. My mother quickly struck out, shouting, “How selfish can you be? Would you want your own sister to be homeless?” She even added, “You owe us!” We paid for your education, therefore you now have a career.” I was surprised and quickly hung up.

Later that night, my father called in a panic, informing me that my mother was upset and I needed to hurry home. When I arrived, I was surprised to find my possessions packed in boxes by the door. My mother told me that since I didn’t consider them “family,” I had no right to keep my belongings in their home. She burst out crying, claiming she never imagined I could be so ungrateful.
Despite everything, I refuse to give in. My sister is a grownup. She made her own decisions, and I should not be expected to fund her life simply because I worked hard for mine. Am I being unreasonable?
