My mother never liked my wife

My mother never liked my wife. On my wedding day, she said, “Son, she’s not the one for you!” I responded: “One day, you’ll love her too!” She nodded. Two years later, Mom died. I went to empty her home. I froze as I peeked under her bed. There were many of my wife’s legal documents dating back years.

As I examined closer, I saw they were all debt records—college tuition, personal loans, credit cards, and so on. They’d all been bought off. By my mother. The sum amounted to $48,000.

That’s when I realized: Mom had found my wife’s debts and knew that marrying her meant I’d be saddled with them—and compelled to forego my own schooling. So she used her retirement funds and life savings to clear it all out quietly.

She had been keeping my wife’s debts hidden from me to protect me, which is why she had pushed so hard to keep me from marrying her. When I confronted my wife, she stated my mother had told her—and urged her to keep it a secret.
