After his father passed away, the son decided to place his mother in a nursing home, visiting her only occasionally. One day, he received a call from the facility: “Your mother is in critical condition… please come see her.” When the son arrived, he found his mother gravely ill, lying on her deathbed. He gently asked, “Mom, is there anything I can do for you?”

With a weak smile, she replied, “There are no fans here, could you please arrange for some? Also, installing a refrigerator would help—they struggle to keep food fresh. I often went to bed hungry.” Shocked, the son said, “Mom, why didn’t you tell me this before? You never complained all this time, and now you’re saying this when you’re so close to the end?”
She softly answered, “I endured the heat, the hunger, and the loneliness. But I’m not sure you will, when your children put you in a place like this one day.” She explained that she wasn’t making the request for herself, but for his future. “That’s why I want this place to be better—so that if your children ever bring you here, you won’t suffer as I did.” Her final words echoed in his heart: “What you give is what you get.”
