I Refuse to Cancel My Dream Trip to Be at My Brother’s Wedding, Even Though His New Request Hurts

I’m in a big bind right now and could use some outside advice. I’m 32 and have spent the last three years methodically organizing a personal adventure that means everything to me. It is more than simply a trip; it is a six-week volunteer adventure to Africa, where I will assist with animal conservation and rehabilitation efforts for endangered species. This has been a longstanding dream of mine, something I’ve saved for, trained for, and am deeply committed to. The program begins just after Christmas, and I’ve already spent about $15,000, not to mention countless hours preparing for it.

But here’s the twist: my older brother recently got engaged after eight months of dating, and they’re planning a wedding for early January—the same weekend I’ll be out in the wilderness with no mobile service. To make matters worse, he asked me to be his best man. Let me be clear: we are really close. He has been my rock in so many ways. But I’ve been preparing for this adventure for years. It’s not just a vacation; it’s something that reflects my interest in animal protection and may perhaps lead to a new professional path. The charges are non-refundable, and the program has severe deadlines that I cannot change.

It’s eating me up inside. I want to be present for his big moment, but this trip is more than a holiday for me. It’s a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to achieve something worthwhile, and passing it up seems like I’m disappointing myself. At the same time, I don’t want to jeopardize my relationship with him or appear to be ignoring this significant milestone in his life. My brother has gone from making passive-aggressive comments to outright accusing me of being selfish for favoring animals before him. What would you do if you were in my position?
