It was a typical morning. The sun had just begun to rise beyond the horizon, sending a beautiful golden glow over the country road. A long-haul truck driver was rushing to deliver his goods on time—a lengthy trip lay ahead, and the clock was ticking brutally.
The engine hummed smoothly, the wheels gripped the tarmac, when a dog sprang out of the bushes beside the road and nearly collided with the truck’s wheels. Shaggy, with black and white fur, it growled fiercely, as if to block the passage. The driver responded immediately, slamming on the brakes, the tires screeching, but it was too late: he had passed the animal and something dark lying in the middle of the road. “What the hell…?” the driver mumbled, jumping out of the taxi, his heart thumping.

The dog remained where he was. It circled the truck and stood beside the black bundle, barking and looking at the man, as if calling him over. The motorist approached and spotted a standard black garbage bag. The wheels grazed it slightly, but it was still intact. “Is this what it was all about?” he asked, bending down and slowly pulling apart the bag’s sides. There was a baby within. A tiny boy. Tiny, wrapped in a thin blanket, scarcely moving and breathing lightly – but alive.
The motorist promptly called for an ambulance and wrapped the baby in his own jacket. The dog sat contentedly beside him, as if its task were completed. It was later discovered that a young woman had discreetly given birth to the boy and then abandoned him, discarding him like rubbish on the roadside.

But fate had another plan. The baby was spared thanks to the dog’s instinct, which proved to be stronger than human brutality. The motorist reflected for a long time on how the dog had stopped him just in time.
