My husband Brian was never the romantic kind, so when he surprised me with a pre-paid spa weekend, I was moved. “Relax,” he stated. “We’ll leave for the family trip tomorrow — I’m getting a work award there, remember?” The spa was heavenly. Until I received a text from my friend Laura: “Where are you?” I just saw your kids, Brian. “AND A WOMAN ALL OVER HIM.”
I sent a photo of Brian, our children, and his parents. with his assistant. Way too close. “They were holding hands,” Laura muttered. “I even saw them kiss.” My heart fell. The spa weekend was a set-up. He had sent me away so he could display his mistress on our family holiday. I didn’t cry—I booked a flight. That night, at his award presentation, I arrived just on time. Before the speeches, I delivered a sealed message to his supervisor.

“Brian wanted this read aloud,” I remarked pleasantly. He winked. So when Brian’s name was called, the CEO began reading. Following various prizes and remarks, the CEO returned to the platform. “And now, for our Outstanding Leadership Award, I’m proud to present Brian.” Brian approached the stage, looking confident in his fitted suit.
“Brian has been a remarkable asset to our company,” the CEO added. “His performance this year has been nothing short of exceptional. “He is dependable, respected, and driven.” “But before we present this honor,” the CEO added, reading my card, “Brian’s wife Kate wanted me to share something about the man behind the success.” The CEO cleared his throat and resumed reading:
“Brian informed everyone that his wife couldn’t attend tonight since she was on a spa weekend. But, in reality, he sent her away so he could bring his mistress, Jennifer, his assistant, along with his children and parents on this family holiday. That is not leadership. “That is deception.” Brian’s face had lost its color. I rose up and approached the stage.
“Hello, darling,” I answered. “SURPRISE!” Brian’s mouth opened and closed, but no words emerged. Behind him, I noticed his parents looking perplexed. Jennifer sat beside them, looking scared. “KATE??” Brian eventually managed, his voice strangled. “What are you doing here?” “I thought I should meet your parents,” I explained quietly. “After three years of marriage, it seemed overdue.”
I turned to face Brian’s parents. “Betty and Frank, it’s great to finally meet you in person! “I’m Kate.” Brian’s father looked between him and me, bewildered. “What’s going on?” Brian stated that you couldn’t come due to work. “Oh, I had work,” I admitted. “But then I got a spa weekend surprise from your son… so his mistress could take my place, apparently.”
Jennifer rose up and grabbed her purse. “I should go.” “Sit down,” Brian’s mother demanded. “You’re not going anywhere until this is explained.” Brian stepped down from the stage. Kate, please. Not here. “Let’s talk privately.” “Like you talked to me privately about bringing your mistress on our family vacation?” I inquired, loud enough for other tables to hear.
“She is not…” It’s not what you think,” he mumbled. “Really? Because Laura noticed you kissing by the pool. Wasn’t that what I thought too? Brian’s father came forward. “You told us she was a friend from work who needed a vacation.” “Dad, I can explain —” “Explain?” His father interrupted. “You introduced this woman to us as your wife’s friend! You let her play with your children when their mother was not present!”
Brian reached for my arm. “Kate, baby, please…” I jerked away. “Do not touch me. I’ll see you and the lawyer on Monday. Do not worry about the children… “I’ve already called the hotel and packed their belongings.” I turned to his boss. “And you might want to reconsider that leadership award.” The fallout was spectacular. Brian’s parents insisted on departing immediately. We returned the children to our home while Brian remained behind, his job and reputation in shambles.
“I can’t believe he would do this,” his mother exclaimed as we sat in my living room the next day. “We raised him better than that.” His father nodded grudgingly. “I want you to know we are on your side, Kate. “Whatever you need.” “Thank you,” I replied. “I’m sorry this is how we finally met.” “So are we,” his mother replied, reaching for my hand. “But I’m glad we know the truth.”
Brian had forgotten about an infidelity clause in our prenuptial agreement, so the divorce process moved quickly. I was granted primary custody of our children, as well as a hefty cash settlement. Brian contacted several times in the subsequent weeks. “Can we talk?” he implored through voicemail. “I made a horrible mistake. “I want to come home.”
I never responded. Instead, I sent the messages to my lawyer. Six months later, I saw Jennifer in a coffee shop. She was astonished to see me. “Kate,” she said nervously. “I-I’m very sorry. I genuinely felt you two had parted.” I studied her expression and recognized genuine regret. “Had he told you about the spa weekend? How did he prepare everything so you could take my place?
She paled. “No. He claimed you had decided not to come.” I nodded, not surprised. “He lied to everybody, Jennifer. “Even you. “I understand that now. “For what it’s worth, he also lost me.” As I walked away with my coffee, I felt solemn satisfaction that the truth had finally been revealed, rather than joy at their shared pain. Today, a year later, I have restored my life. My children are prospering, my career is flourishing, and I’ve even resumed dating.
Brian still works for the same company, however he was passed up for promotion following the incident. I wonder if he ever considers how his intricate deceit failed so horribly. They think that karma comes for everyone eventually. However, assistance is occasionally necessary. and a crimson dress that is just scary enough to complete the task.
