When I moved into the new house with my one-year-old kid, I expected to start a fresh, tranquil life. The first several days were peaceful and uneventful. But on the fourth or fifth day, I saw an odd thing on the carpet in my bedroom. It resembled a thin, semi-transparent ribbon wrapped into a circle. I assumed it was some type of rubbish, possibly dried-up packaging tape. When I touched it, it felt soft, much like paper, and seemed alive. Inside, there was a distinct scale pattern. I felt a cold.

I still attempted to be sensible. “You never know what happens in old houses,” I reminded myself. But then other things happened. At night, I began to hear weird sounds, like if something was rustling beneath the floor. Sometimes there is a slight, barely audible hissing. At first, I assumed it was the downstairs neighbors, possibly with children or pets. But after a few days, the sounds became louder. They got closer, as if moving under our feet. Particularly in the bathroom.
I began to feel terrified. My son slept in his crib, and I frequently woke up at night to make sure everything was okay. On the sixth day, I discovered another shred of the weird “ribbon.” This time, it’s behind the nursery dresser. The same soft, semi-translucent substance. I began searching online. It was a snakeskin. I felt uneasy. I contacted specialists—the animal control service. They arrived the next morning.
They investigated the bathroom, kitchen, and basement. And that’s when we realized the truth. Spotted rat snakes, which are big North American snakes, had established under our house’s floor. They are not venomous but are rather stunning. Furthermore, they had created a nest under the bathtub with numerous pups. Now I can scarcely sleep at night. I constantly check to see sure the ventilation grilles are closed and all cracks are properly sealed.
If you hear unusual noises or find mysterious things, please don’t dismiss them. It might not be just trash or a random sound. Be careful. Behind your house’s walls, you may find something unexpected.
